Herringbone Coat: How is the fit?

I have been casually looking for a fall/winter coat in light grey and found this herringbone one at Nordstrom. I really like the style. It has pretty
loose/big shoulders by design and is more fitted through the body than the find photo would indicate. It isn't quite warm enough for deep winter alone for me but I could fit a blazer or bulky sweater underneath it. It could also work well for late fall.

However, I think the shoulder area is just a little too big. I tried a size down but then the lower half of the coat was too tight. .

What do you think of the fit?

Lovely coat! I do think you are onto something with the shoulder/upper arm/upper torso fit, especially when it isn't buttoned. Fit is better buttoned. Would you wear it buttoned or open? I have sloping shoulders and often have these same fit issues with this style. The coat is a flattering color for you! Love a herringbone pattern!

Thanks greycat6. I would wear it closed in colder weather...which for me is quite a number of months of the year. I have sloping shoulders too, you are right that this style can be tricky for us

Colour is flattering, but the shoulder fit is off and the sleeves are too long. It also sounds like you would have to work too hard to make it work for your climate.

Chris, are you wearing something under the coat that could be throwing off the shoulder fit? I really love the coat and the color is great for you.

It's a great colour on you, Chris! I love the coat itself, too. Is it meant to be a cocoon cut? With dropped shoulder?

A slight A line shape might work better -- more fit in the shoulder, looser in the body. But I have to admit, I like an oversized coat sometimes and if it feels good and the price is right, might be tempted to experiment with it.

I wonder if I might see what a larger size is like - is the style is meant to be roomy ?

I agree that the shoulder line is off. It even makes the model look like she has sloping shoulders. I want to add shoulder pads to clean up the look, but I'm not sure what then happens with the dropped shoulder seam.

Jill58, thanks! I have on a denim shirt over a very thin long sleeved underlayer, so that should not be influencing the fit of the coat.

Suz I do think it's meant to be a cocoon cut with dropped shoulders, and oversized. An a-line coat would be much easier to fit for me.

Jane thanks. I did try one size up and it was clearly way too big. It is meant to be a roomy style but it looked awful.

carter - hah, yes I see what you mean about wanting to add shoulder pads :-). I think I'd rather look for a different coat altogether.

Not close enough. Pass. The torso fit and length are great. VERSATILE. Sleeves too long and a little snug, perhaps. Colour a dash too cool.

I struggle with the current " dropped shoulder" style and finally decided it just wasn't for me. Maybe try a slightly oversized cut with straight or raglan shoulder? Length looks good to me. A coat is usually a major, long term purchase so get what you love.

You’ve gotten good comments about the fit. Now I’m going to ask you about the style. For me, a new winter coat like this would be a major purchase, and I would expect it to last for years and years. I don’t know if it’s that way for you.

But about the coat’s styling: Are you reaching for the dropped shoulders as a way to be a little edgy? To me, the coat doesn’t give off that vibe. It is a nice medium grey coat, very safe. You could move closer to the style goals you posted about recently with shoes and accessories, but I think you could find a coat that is more in line with them. Just my opinion.

So glad you have decided to pass on this. It is a beautiful coat, but just looks a size too big. I am sure you can do better. I would prefer to see you in a brighter coloured coat - do you have a favourite colour? My most worn coat is blue, even though I have more neutral coats in back and beige - the blue coat is the one that I reach for most often because I love the colour.

Canada, your style suggestiosn are spot on, the raglan/dropped sleeve thing usually doesn't work on me. There are a lot of sweaters in this style these days too, and those don't usually work for me either although once in a while they do.

Fashintern, this particular coat would not have been that major an investment at $125 US, nowhere where what I'd expect to pay for a heavy winter coat, but I don't want to throw my money away either. You may have hit on something really important about me looking for a little bit of "edgy" style. I've been thinking that maybe I truly AM doing that.

Bijou - a bright coat for this time of year is a great idea, or a neutral color but in a print. I do have coats in the red/raspberry family for winter, and I have a cinnamon fall coat for when it gets a bit cooler, but nothing in a bright color for this time of year except a bright tomato red windbreaker (plus a steel blue short trench)
