hemming and hawing - YouLookFab Forum

need some advice/guidance on hemming...

we moved to a "dress for your day" dress code for the summer...ie casual and jeans (no rips/tears/distressing) are ok most days...and we think it will continue this fall. so i've been thinking about my denim collection and expanding it....yesterday i picked up these great high waisted straight leg jeans at a great price....they fit really well, except i'm not sure that the lenght should be.....i've tucked one leg up and cuffed the other and tried them with a variety of booties...and the pictures just got me more confused...hem? don't hem? are the just to long and when hemmed them won't work? if hem, at what lenght?

Those jeans fit you very nicely. I will leave the advice on the hem to others as I am always thinking if I shorten too much my legs will get cold...

I think they are too wrinkly over the knees, you can really see that in the close-ups. To me, that means they are still too long because they won't sit unwrinkled? I may not be correct and may need more knowledgeable Fabbers to weigh in. My preference is for them turned under, rather than cuffed. Great shoes!

I agree with Jenny - still too much fabric - I think they need to be shortened further to eliminate the wrinkles. I don't mind the contrast cuff. Can you perhaps do another photo post?

Definitely still too long. They should fall directly from the knee to whatever length you decide you want them I think this is difficult because so much depends on the shank of your boot and whether there is enough width at the leg circumference. Or do you want them above the shank itself, more of a cropped look? I have tussled with this issue myself, and have come to the conclusion that one length does not fit all shoe styles. You have to pick. Bummer when they are jeans you really love and want to be versatile!

hmmmm...ok, conclusion, as i suspect ---hem....the SA at the boutique that i bought them at suggested that i didn't really need to hem, but i knew in my gut that was not right...the struggle is at what lenght, and now i worry that the slim staight leg may make this difficult....will have to take to my tailor and see....sigh, techically my tailor is wonderful, but fashion wise, not the best....

I like the fit on you. I wouldn't bother hemming, I don't mind narrow jeans stacking on shoes, but apparently you do.

I'm with Skylurker and the SA- wouldn't bother to hem. I look the look as is.

I wouldn't bother to them, either. as long as they don;t touch the ground, I think you're fine.

I have problems figuring out where to hem straight leg jeans as well. Bootcuts I can figure out, but this style all depends on how much wrinkling you can live with. Personally, I like the look on the left boot of your photos, but that's just my opinion.
