Help with Theory pants sizing

Hm, I remember Angie saying that Theory does run small and I did go up 1 size in the Theory Yanette pants during NAS (which fit beautifully). I also have an older Theory jacket that is, again, one size larger than I normally wear.

i size up 1 possibly two sizes depending on the cut. theory cuts narrow in the leg and arm for me.

Good question and I'm literally looking at a Theory business card and the SA recommended a size 2 in the Gabe B and Max C jacket and pants. I regularly wear a size 2, so I didn't have to go up, and although I didn't buy them (that's why I still have the card!), I do feel that Inge and Angie are on to something as the sizing was more fitted and snug on me. I've seen comments of them being cut small too, but my experience has been pretty TTS with Theory -- I have one jacket in a 6, one in an 8. Another in a medium. All pretty typical for me. A pair of jeans in a 6, which in all honesty I could have worn in an 8 (I wear long tops over them), but an 8 is still not unusual for me. But trousers may be another story!

i think they are true to size, but not cut for every body. best i can describe it, they have a narrower fit than other "work wear" brand. i really like how there pants fit, and own quite a few pairs.

I think it might depend a bit on the style. I have a pair of the wide leg classic trousers in a 2 that fit perfectly (and I am typically a 2). But I just bought a pair of the moto leggings and I chose the 4.

If you generally wear petites you might size DOWN simply because of size translations. When I buy petites I sometimes (not always) size up, e.g. where I'd wear a 2 in Ann Taylor regulars, I will wear a 4 P. That may be why your size 0 regular jacket fits you.

I'm really torn about whether I should order my normal size 4 or if I should size down because they are not petites. Or if I should size up because many people say that Theory runs small.

Can you call for the exact measurements? That might help.

Based on my try-on experience and the two pairs I own (different styles) I think Theory pants may be cut narrower in the hip area and perhaps a little shorter in the rise than typical regular sizes.

That makes me think that I should just stick to my normal size and not try to play around with going up or down.

Clothing measurements never help me. If I go by the size charts, I always get it wrong. Maybe it is because I am 5' tall, clothes never hit on me where the designers intended.

I go up a size in Theory they run small for me. They run very narrow.

I'm also 5' -- I am most consistently a size 2P in most petite brands (AT, BR). However, I am all over the map with Theory. I have a blazer that is a size 0. I have two dresses that are size 2, but I have tried on other dresses in that size that didn't fit at all (could not zip), and sizing up made the length all wrong.

I don't own any of the pants as I find the rise too low, but if it wasn't for that, I'd take a 0. They do fit quite narrow in the hips and thighs, which is what I need, as that's where I am smallest. If you are an inverted triangle (sorry I forget what shape you are) then I would start with the size 0. If you are more average below the waist, go with the 2. If you are curvier, try the 4.

I do like the pants and I would experiment more with Theory except what drives me nuts is the lack of lining. The fabrics are very nice, but scratchy without a lining. And if I'm going to pay that price... I expect a lining! What is up with that???

I don't own any, but I just tried on some slimmer Theory pants (not trousers though, more like a slim cargo style) yesterday. I normally wear an 8 in other brands, and I had to go up to 12 to get them to fit over my hips. The waist was huge on the 12 though. I've had this experience with other of their pants too, so I'd say they run narrow in the hips and thighs but maybe normal elsewhere.

@shiny, that is good advice. I am an apple/petite/hourglass. I would say I am normal on the bottom, not inverted triangle or slim.

I have a pair of burgundy wool pants, these ones:

I am 5'2", somewhere between 122 and 125, and I purchased these in a 4 regular, and got them hemmed.

(The lack of lining is really annoying and yes the pants are scratchy!!!)

Interesting...my wool pants from Theory are also not lined but I do not find them at all scratchy; they are super soft!

I wonder if that is different fabric or differently sensitive bodies. Hmmm.

ETA: mine are a flannel with a bit of stretch but almost entirely wool. Not a blend, just 2% stretch. So it looks like different fabric.

Suz, I wouldn't call myself particularly sensitive: I routinely wear wool sweaters with no layer and have no problem. To be fair, I haven't tried Theory slacks on in a couple of years, since I didn't have any luck with them. I just find it odd that they'd be that expensive, and unlined. Also for cold Boston winters unlined trousers are simply unthinkable.
