Help! We will be in LA and need guidance

Greg and I will be in Los Angeles, CA for a business meeting on Friday 3rd June. I was hoping to meet YLF'ers on Saturday 4th June! Sorry that we cannot change our dates as they are cast in stone.

It has been suggested that we stay at a hotel in "downtown LA, around FIDM, Staples Center, LA Live". Of course, this is Greek to me and your help is greatly appreciated.

We will be traveling to Vernon for the business meeting, but we want to stay in a hotel close to the YLF gathering (hopefully there will be one) - and it has to be nice because I'm not packing away my tiara or this trip

Who would like to meet up in LA on Saturday 4th June?

argh! we'll be driving to LA on the 4th but already have plans for the remainder of the day. Otherwise, I would have loved to join in the fun.

The places mentioned in your Greek message are places in downtown. Vernon is very close to downtown. FDIM - fashion institute of design & merchandise, a top college for arty professions. Staples Center is where the NBA basketball team Lakers play. There are lots of nice hotels/restaurants/happenings in the downtown area but I typically avoid the area because of driving is a pain due to one way streets/traffic/parking, etc. so I don't know the area well.

Funny, after seeing your closeup on the scarf tie post, I was thinking how wonderful it'd be to meet this amazing lady in person.. and here I may just get my chance! I will absolutely try my best effort, bribing DH if necessary, but all depends on the time & place.. unfortunately i have higher priority duties as soccer mom..

I used to go to LA yearly for a convention and would always stay by the Staples Centre/LA Live, which are basically right next to each other. I've stayed at the Westin Bonaventure and the Wilshire Grand, and both were nice, but the Westin's rooms were the strangest shape I'd ever seen, and not terribly big. LA Live is quite nice to walk around in; its got a bunch of restaurants and stuff and there are actually people there, unlike a lot of downtown LA (in my admittedly woefully limited experience).

Downtown Los Angeles has come a long way in the past few years. It's one of my favorite places to hang out. Some of the areas are great and I don't have a problem walking around just about any time but skidrow does border downtown. I say that because it can shock people from out of the area.

Downtown itself is pretty walkable and it's one of the few parts of LA that is well serviced by the subway--funny, I'll take a train but I hate the bus. You should be fine with any of the major hotels downtown. I know everyone thinks of LA as a huge suburb but this is a real city and there really isn't too much free parking. I've never paid attention to shopping there because if there aren't any plus size shops--and there aren't--I'm out of luck.

All that being said, I should be able to make it! Oh lord, now I have to figure out what to wear...

My last trip to LA was a trip with my mom (we had so much fun together!), and we stayed at the Renaissance in West Hollywood. I'm not sure if that's considered downtown or not, but I liked the location--my mom wanted to do a lot of the tourist stuff, like going to the Kodak Theater, and we were very close. It was also close to the subway, which was helpful for going places like Universal Studios. I'm guessing that those won't be part of your trip, but I did like the hotel.

Prior to that, my boyfriend and I stayed at the London West Hollywood, and we liked that hotel as well. (I do check all hotels on bedbugregistry.com and google about bed bug issues before staying anywhere now--many very nice hotels have had bed bug issues. Just throwing that out there as a PSA.)

I have very little advice, as I've never had to find a hotel in SoCal, and all I know about downtown is where they sell all the cheap fabric... but I would *definitely* love to join the meetup group. Holy cats, I need to start planning an outfit, like, now!
