Help please! Bought a nude dress...how to wear without looking dead?

Hi everyone,

I few weeks ago I posted about potentially getting a nude dress. You can read the original post here:

I have very pale, pink-toned, almost translucent skin and I'm aware of the potential issues of looking washed out and "dead" with these kinds of colours.

The original idea was to get something kind of "pink/nude" toned to complement my skin tone. But I saw this dress in a thrift store for $7 yesterday and thought, hey, why not, might as well try it to see if it'll work for me...without breaking the bank on a brand new dress. It's definitely more of a beigey nude than a pink nude.

I styled it 4 different ways. I won't say which I personally prefer right now as I am very keen to hear your perspectives. Unfortunately I didn't have time to experiment with makeup which might make a bit of difference...I'm simply wearing mascara and a little foundation under the eyes...everything else is au naturale. It's also highly likely I will wear nude stockings/tights/hose to take the super whiteness out of my legs.

So, the major questions:
1) Does it work? At all? Or is it simply awful? No biggie if it is cos it only cost $7
2) Which combo is best?
3) Belted or unbelted?

That is a really sweet and pretty dress - perfect for a date, and you have such a pretty face shape!

I prefer it belted with either the red or black belt - I like the vintage look of the buckle. What I am not sure about is the matching shoes, belt and handbag (perhaps someone else will comment).

You could also try it with plum/purple accessories.

Also, I think that you should try photographing in natural light as well.

It's a lovley dress is it lacy? Hopefully Angie will chime in but it looks a tad short to be worn without leggings?
In terms of accessories it looks great belted and unbelted and i think it needs the darker/ more vibrant accessories of the black, red and coral x

I am really surprised that I prefer the 2nd and 4th pictures with the lighter color accessories...the red and black were fine but seemed a bit harsh against the color of the dress to me.
I like Fi's idea of plum colored accessories. You get the contrast without the harshness. Even a softer red would work well.
But honeslty, I think you could do just about anything with it and have a great outfit.

Tara, is the dress cream? It looks cream on my monitor and very cute on you.

I recently saw this image and thought a grey cardi may look lovely over your dress.

I also think black opaques could look good if worn with a black blazer.

Out of the accessories photographs I prefer the red, I don't mind the matching as I view this as retro rather than matchy-matchy.

All the options looked nice, but the peachy/coral accessories were my favorite.

I don't think the color makes you look dead at all. In fact, I think the more beige color really plays up the peachiness in your skin nicely.

Since you do it so well, have you thought about layering a top under the dress? I liked the idea of it with a black blazer and tights as well. I think it was a great score for your wardrobe.

I prefer it belted. I like the red best, but the comments about tights or leggings are good ideas. If you paired it with a blazer it would be a cool fem/ menswear combo.

I like the 1st and 3rd looks the best. The "red" and the "pink & black". The dress is beautiful and you have a stunning figure. I do not think the dress is too short. It looks great belted or unbelted. I think this dress fits both your body and your personality and will be a versatile piece for you. Wear it all sorts of ways with all sorts of colors. You rock it!

Pretty dress! I will leave the length issue to others: it is too short for my taste but hey, you are young!
I do not like black with it - too harsh contrast IMO - but I like all other combinations.

I don't think there is any problem with the color of the dress. Personally, I like it best with the red accessories. My least favorite is the last photo, with the pink, because I feel like it blends too much with the dress--I prefer a pop of color.

I also just wanted to discourage you from wearing hose/tights with this to hide the whiteness of your legs. I actually don't think your legs look that pale at all, and there is certainly nothing wrong with their color. I think that hose that makes your legs darker might ruin the look a bit.

Wow. You really rock that dress. You're young enough to wear it short, so iif you're comfortable with it, go for it. You certainly have the figure for it.

I actually like it with the black. It gives it edge. And maybe add black leggings? I think it depends on where you're wearing it. I can see black accessories for drinks with friends. The other looks I could see for dinner with the family, date night, etc. It's such a good neutral base you can play around with lots of different looks. You have tons of jewelry, right? You can have a field day with this dress!

I "like* the dress. It's not actually the colour that I find challenging - it's the style. It's really short and the spaghetti straps are so-so.You can absolutely pull off a nude dress and your instinctive creativity with accessories is spot on. Well done on that part!
