Help me with "frosted citrus" please

Hi YLF friends. At long last this JCrew Boulevard Trench has arrived. I love the weird yellow-green of this "frosted citrus," but I need a color check to help me decide whether its okay.

My reckoning was that as it is a very greenish yellow, it's probably as cool as you could get on the color spectrum. I always aim for the cooler side within a color's own spectrum because I have the cooler blond hair and lighter eyes. One clue JCrew gave me that this coat is probably okay for my coloring is the buttons. They are exactly the shades in my hair.

Fit Note: This coat runs big. On top of that, I think it is cut rather large through the body, leaving it sort of sloppy when left unbottoned. If you try it I would order it one or two sizes DOWN. I don't know if I like the fit, but I can get this color coat in another style that I like, the Majesty Peacoat.

PS the bare feet! I was so excited to try the coat straight out of the box that I didn't stop to put my shoes back on!

It's hard to tell in that light but I think it works. I don't think it looks big either.

Never even noticed the barefeet I was so taken with the coat. Love this shade on you! I looked long and hard at this, but since I am ordering from Canada and would have difficulty with the return, asked my dear SO to order the Majesty peacoat in heather twilight. I've been able to try the peacoat on and am sure of the sizing. Will you keep this?

I don't think its a keeper, merwoman. It just looks a mess when hanging open. I think what I will do is order the Majesty in this color instead. I just loooove this color, but must be sure it's ok before proceeding into a piece that is up near my face.

It's not a colour I gravitate towards, but wow, it looks amazing on you! You look fab.

I love the fit buttoned up but it's not so good if you can't unbutton!

Would the Burberry trick work on this? Basically, they like to button the side of the coat back on itself to reduce the volume of the fronts when they are open. I can't tell if this fabric would work with that though, plus you'd need there to be buttonholes on the inside flap as well. Try tying the belt behind you as well.

I am conflicted about the colour. I don't think it's a terrible colour for you at all, but I am not sure it's your best. I suspect that seeing this IRL would solve my dilemma immediately lol.

I'm going to be a spanner here (sorry!) - but, I don't think it's a flattering color on you. To me, its just too faded of a color for your skin/hair tone and eye color, and the color is too warm. I think a green that has a bluish base would work better for you!

Marley I don't think you can see, but it's a very cool yellow, not warm, meaning it goes towards green on the color wheel...But it's not one of those "sure bet" colors on me like pink is so I don't think I will go there!

I really like it on you in the pics. I think the colour is pretty awesome and am sure it would look terrible on me. I am a little worried you like a sharper, less relaxed fit... not that it's that relaxed, but it's the tiniest bit ever on the slouchy side.

It's hard for me to tell if the color is flattering because right now I'm obsessed with yellowish greens (or greenish yellows) so that may be why I think it looks great!

You raise an interesting point. I was telling DD that it's strange that I'm liking yellowish greens when usually I'm in cool colors. She answered that if you think of the color as greenish yellow, then it's a very cool yellow! Just as you said.

I like the color on you and the buttons do tie in with your hair. Such an interesting color. It's like a softened citron. I bet you could do full blown citron as well. You have to be comfortable with the fit as well.

It's probably not your best color but I think it looks fine on you and if the color makes you that happy, maybe you should have it.

I like the color for you. Not ure about the fit, it looks fine from pictures to my eye. Did you layer under it? How warm you would need to layer with this coat? I usualy make sure I can layer a leather or wool blazer under the coat comfortably...

From what I see on my monitor, I really like the color on you (and that completely surprises me). I'm scared to death of this color, and wouldn't have thought any yellow could ever be cool (you could also say its a very warm green I guess). I'm intrigued by this color theory. Is there a book or website where I could read more about it?

I second Diana, who suggests tying the belt tightly in back, and buttoning the front back against itself using the extra "double-breasted" buttons before you send it back. If you're just not feeling it though, it's better not to keep it as it has a high orphan potential if you don't love it.

ETA: You will always look amazing in natural horn buttons with that lovely hair of yours!

Oh - I can't trust my monitor when it comes to judgeing colors! It looks like a faded warmish green color to me - kind of a "muddied" yellow if you know what I mean? I think you look better in "clearer" colors - But, it sounds as though IRL it's working for you - and, if I loved the color of an item, I would lean towards keeping it no matter what anyone else said!

I like that it is such a different color and almost "neutral" but I'm not sold on it for you.

I think paradoxically that although it's kind of a pastel and since it's yellowish you'd think it's great for blondes, the way creamy colors often do, but to me it's not really a "blonde" color but would look better on someone with darker hair and coloring to provide more contrast, not less.

Also it looks like the picture was taken on a cloudy day....better wait until the sun comes out to get another look at it.

@Marley, the color might look less muted in sunlight. It just looks really pale to me, hence the "frosted" in the name. I don't think there is any brown added to it. Now I'm so curious I'm going to look it up on their website!

Back again. Marley is right, it does look like it has a bit of brown mixed in. I like the "heather stone" color, but I'm not sure what it would look like with your blonde hair.

karymk - Janet got the Majesty Peacoat in Heather Mineral at our recent Shoptoberfest - she was going to change out the buttons as she didn't like the gold - but oh, what a beautiful color! I looked on line for it in the frosted citrus, but can't find it. Is that color only in the stores?

Marley I saw janet's coat! I love that color! You guys are right, It may not be a fab color on me, and I have a pair of pants in it for now to satisfy that urge for something 'off beat". The frosted Citrus was only available in this model of coat, not the Majesty, not this year.

Clearlyclaire--yes! I do have a book recommend for you. Give me a sec to dig and find it. I have studied color theory, I have painted also which helps you learn about Munsell Scale, color wheel, the difference between what is a shade and what is a tone of a color, etc. You can "toast" a color, you can "mute" a color. There is so much to learn about color! It literally opens your eyes to the world in a whole new way.
