I like this site for its color analysis explanation:

I also read somewhere where a gal went into a dressing room with many tees in a range of colors. She turned her back to the mirror as she put on each tee. Then she faced the mirror and whichever color made her say "wow" that became her signature color.
I once tried on a red blouse that made me say "wow" and I couldn't figure out why, since I've worn red many times before. After I wore the red blouse to a church function, a particulary stylish woman complimented the blouse and informed me that this red had blues in it. That's what got me finding out about colors and now I know I am a winter and I should stay away from shades that have yellows in it. For example tomato red has more yellows in it that give it a slight orange tint. That doesn't mean I don't wear yellow. I have a yellow swing jacket and a yellow cardigan. The shade of these two yellows are darker and brighter which look better on me. I think turquoise is definitely blue, but there can be a teal green or a teal blue. I tend to stay away from the teal greens and look much better in the teal blues.
I don't know if I'm explaining this right, but I do know that finding the right colors for your skin tone is just as important as finding the right fit for your body shape. If there is a color you like but it's not great for your skin tone, then wear it as an accessory that is away from your face or layer a good color on top of that not so great color and you'll be fine. I think there's always a balancing act to looking nice and so there's always a way to compensate for figure weaknesses and color weaknesses.
