Help me trouble shoot this outfit

I wore this last Friday (casual fri).

Mostly I've worn this kimono with either a column of white or a column of dark colours,

But I didn't feel like my white top, and noticing there's cobalt blue in the kimono pattern I tried it with this top. My daughers liked it too and so I went off.

But I really am not sure about it. Angie has said previously that I should semi tuck this top, but it looked weird with the kimono that way. And the jeans are looking rather baggy at the crotch.

Also, it was hot some of the day and I took the kimono off - and I think the outfit is even worse then.

All in all, I'm not happy, but I'd love your help in pinpointing other factors that are contributing.

Well, I love that you have layered a kimono, it's one of my favourite looks. Here's some ideas you may like to try:

1) I think these pants are a little too baggy. They might work better if you roll up the cuffs? That could take out some excess fabric.

2) I think the cobalt top is enough of a statement in itself, possibly the kimono needs a layering top that can play "second fiddle" to it and really let the kimono shine. Possibly something without any collar or buttons.

I think you need either volume on bottom (boyfriend jeans) OR volume on top (kimono). If the shoes were less contrast to the pants, it would create a longer line as well.

Thanks Jussie. I did try cuffing the jeans and it kind of interfered with the boots. Yes I agree that the top is just tipping over to too statementy. Mind you I didn't like pic 3 either, with no kimono!

Thanks delurked! I think these jeans have grown. They were supposed to be skinnies and I'm sure I'm not smaller. Must resign myself to buying jeans that are tighter at point of purchase.

And re the shoes,; I take your point. I think my silver sneakers would have been better.

Anne, those jeans are not skinnies any more, they look too big on you. I think it is the loose fit of the jeans, coupled with the loose layers that are likely to make you feel a bit lost in this outfit. Your kimono is very pretty and would look great over a column of colour.

I think you guys have solved it and I think your silver sneakers and the jeans rolled would have made it more cohesive.

I have two kimonos and I wear mine with slim or skinny pants (black, white or denim) and a plain top (navy or black). I struggle to wear them in other ways but I do enjoy wearing them.

Jeans are too big on you Anne, they look floppy. And the black boots don't suit the summery outfit, to my mind? I also feel there isn't enough cobalt in the kimono to wear a cobalt top. I like the top by itself but maybe with a different bottom.

Anne, this is my two cents:

outfit needs low contrast and structure
cuff the jeans
add lighter boots
a belt to keep the jeans structured
a lighter top

Tighter,shorter bottom half,sandals or equivalent,not boots,top under kimono not a button up blouse try something like a silky t shirt.

I feel the top is too covered up for the kimono. As Angie says, more structure... it would be nice to see collar bone...

I'll take it the advice on board (and maybe try chucking those white jeans in the dryer to tighten up a bit and if that doesn't work, get a belt, a la Angie)

I agree with Angie and Jenni. Also, tucking the top would add more structure. The top and kimono seem too close to the same length with the top worn out. (Photo 2)
