Help me style this top + Results with more photos

I bought this denim top this summer while on vacation and loved wearing it. But, I had no way to photograph it or even look at it in a mirror. Now I'm home and today I tried a few tops with my new Loft crop flares. (I let the hem down on my flares and really like the look.) #1 and #2 turned out good but #3 with the new denim top is super unflattering. Any suggestions on styling this cute top? Or should I just give it up.

Laurel suggested a black pencil skirt which unfortunately I don't have, but I do have the EF harem pants which I have never worn, so I decided to give them a try - I think I look a bit like Humpty Dumpty.

I would try full length black straight pants, like a chino or straight black Jean. Something kind of reined in but not super skinny. Thd pencil il skirt is s good idea if you had one, or similarly but more casual ( and ususlly a bit longer) , a tube skirt.

Do you feel it's unflattering because the hem stops at the widest part of your hips? Is there room to layer under it? Sometimes when I feel a shorter top is stopping at a place on my hips that is less flattering to me, I'll layer a longer tank (worn out) underneath it. Something about the two horizontal lines across the hip confuses the eye and calls less attention to the widest place. In my non-expert opinion, that is.

Wow - some really good ideas to try.
Angie: I think part of the problem is that the top is too big and bulky, I should have tried a smaller size but this was an end of season purchase and I was not at home. I haven't tried it with blue because I thought the blues might clash, but I think it will work. I notice that you wear it with other blues.
unfrumped: I do have chino pants in ink and that may work. I'll try it and thank you.
Andrea H: This is a really good solution, too. Confusing the eye is exactly what I need to do to save this top.
Another question: Why do I look so awkward in the harem pants when everyone else looks so elegant? I've been away for three months, so have be trying to catch up with my summer/hot fall wardrobe.

"Tight on top-loose on bottom; loose on top-tight on bottom. ". I love your solutions, Angie, the minimalist denim pants in neutral colors or the pop of color pants or skirt. I bought a yellow pencil skirt last December on deep, deep discount at Macy's. Thanks for another great styling idea for it.

Do you have a denim pencil skirt Bonnie? I think the denim on denim could work well here. Also, have you tried it with shorts (if you wear them)?

Nice pieces. I find that when something seems off in a high contrast between top and bottom outfit, reducing that level of contrast can sometimes help. Perhaps try a darker bottom with top 3 and see if you are happier with it. You are rocking summery looks.

Thank you. You all gave me some great ideas which I tried out this afternoon and I think I'll keep the top as I found some outfits that are JFE.

abby: Loose on the top, tight on the bottom - you are so right.
Brooklyn: I have no skirts but I tried shorts.
Tammyb: Thank you. I think the problem is the curved hem in the front of the top which exposes too much tummy and actually exaggerates the tummy area.
Eliza: Our hot weather lasts until Halloween, so I have lots of time to wear hot weather clothes.

I agree with the suggestions to try a lower contrast bottom, which you did and they look much better IMHO. I particularly like #1 and #3.

Thank you Chris, I like the addition of a third piece, too. Andrea H was the one who suggested layering a longer tank and I would have never thought of it. I think I'm destined to wear low contrast outfits as they seem to work best for my body shape (whatever it is - kind of a combo of everything).

I was going to suggest doing exactly what you did in new pic #1! The top really works worn open and layered like that. And may I add that you look adorable in the two light-shirt+white-pants outfits? Really pretty!

Bonnie, I really like it with the white pants. I wonder if you are just thrown off by the different length--it is not the same look or proportions as the other two tops you showed here initially. I also like it with the black longer pants and shorter ones in your second round of photos. My preference is for it buttoned as a top, but it also works shirt-jacket style. I hope you'll wear and enjoy it, because I think it's really pretty on you.

Bonnie, I don't think the Madewell shirt is too big - mine fits similarly in the bodice. May I suggest scrunching the sleeves (instead of rolling), and if they don't hold their shape scrunched - add a little stitch:

Of the new outfits, I like #6 and #8 best, plus the white jeans in the first round. But wearing the shirt as a topper over a graphic tee is cute too. Well done.

Angie: I put this Madewell top in my Finds after you recommended it, and bought it when it went on sale. It is beautifully made and I love that it comes out of the dryer only needing a bit of ironing. I am definitely going to try the scrunching tip - thanks for the link. Another question I have is, should I chop the black skinnies, #6, or continue to wear them rolled?

I think the top looks cute on you. I like it with contrasting pants - the white, and darker colors. Otherwise it looks like you tried to match but failed.
