Help me find the mother of all HEWI's....

For those who have followed Angie's dressy thread you will have seen Bijou's gorgeous velvet frock coat. I have been looking for a long frock coat - black only, velvet, silk, brocade - any dressy fabric. Swallowtail cut, since the 90"s when Vogue did a spread on Anna Sui's velvet frock coats. Gryffin, the maker of my dress (Moss and Spy - an Australian label) has a beautiful black frock coat as per the link.

I have bought quite a few dresses and coats over the years from this designer, and find the quality to be very good. Unfortunately I have not seen this coat in person, the shop I bought my dress from does not get the entire Moss and Spy collection (which is available in Sydney). The smallest size this coat comes in is Australian size 8 (which is about a US size 2 or 4).

I am so glad that you like my green velvet coat!

Bijou - thank you. That's definitely in the style I'm looking for. From the photo it does not look like the coat is lined and I have kind of a poison eye for lettuce edging. But that's so close. But I've waited this long, I will wait till it's perfect. When I compromise I'm not usually happy. Your coat is divine. If it were black velvet you'd be right to be concerned that I might track you down and steal it!! I hope you will post outfits with it. It's a wonderful forever piece!! Enjoy it!!

Gryffin, my coat may well be redone next season in black velvet. I know that there was a big demand for my coat, so it is likely that Cue will redo the style again just in another colour. I will definitely keep an eye out for this. I have always adored frock coats too after seeing Alexander McQueen's versions.

Thank you Bijou!! I've waited decades, I'm due for something to turn up eventually. I have to be careful because I get impatient and then buy something not quite right and it's a poor choice. I waited a long time for my long tux jacket, I just have to be patient but I will be scoped locked on Cue in the future!!

Sara - that's a good idea and I did do a short search. I am always concerned about quality and if it were custom it can't be returned. It's certainly a good option but I was hoping to find something from a major brand and a returnable store. But thank you it's a great suggestion.

I love a velvet coat! I have a solid black velvet coat and a navy silk long velvet coat/cloak that Ive had for years.... its always fun to browse the party wear, especially some of the super luxe couture designers

How costumey are you willing to go? A place like RebelsMarket.com has a lot of kitch, but once you plow through the dross, you might find gold in there. Maybe. It won’t be as classy as Rebekahphoto’s first two suggestions, but could still be fun.

Angie - thank you I checked Free People, Anthropologie, J Peterman, Peruvian Connection, among others. It's a real HEWI. It will turn up someday hopefully!! But with so many savvy shoppers, I thought it was worth asking in case I was missing something. Or perhaps when it is least expected someone will see something and post. Hope springs eternal!!
Rebekah - what a total sweetheart you are!! Thank you for all the links! I bought a JPeterman velvet long jacket long ago but returned it. The velvet was boxy without drape. The coat is pretty but if you look on the model the pocket flaps are sticking out hip level in a not flattering way. Again so close but I don't think the fit will be right. The repro sites are a good thought but again I am concerned about returns and quality. Also many are beautiful but too maximal. It's about the line and fabric - for me I want simple because the shape is so dramatic. But they were all super thoughts. Thank you so much for posting them. It's very, very appreciated!!!

Fashintern - not costumey at all. I am looking for a gorgeous, high quality, simple, elegant piece that transcends time. Classy and luxe. The quality of smythe. If they did a frock coat I would try and save up for it. Like the smythe corded blazer that I bought but with a much longer swallowtail. But that level of fabric, tailoring, elegance and quality. That's the problem in a nut shell.

Boden features a velvet party coat, but it is round-neckline and not frock- style.
And for me is maybe not long enough for usual party dresses. Caught my eye though because I can never find things exactly when I need them, and struggle with whether to collect things for future events.

I would never have thought to check out Vivienne Westwood. I will be surfing to see if she has something affordable in black. That's very close to what I want. Unfrumped - I will check out boden. I have never purchased from that brand but I am impressed by all the wonderful reviews and feedback. Thanks so much for reminding me. Frock coat is a wish, but a great long velvet jacket would be very helpful. I'm flexible, it's the overall vibe with quality and fit that I am searching for. Sometimes what you really need is not what is in your head (although I'd a pretty fab image!!)

Just received a catalog from a new to me vendor, Gorsuch. Quick scan suggests they are generally "spendy", but there are many longer dressy jackets to check out, if only for ideas. Good luck with your search. That would be a fun piece to own!

FYI Vivienne Westwood also has the Anglomania line. The styling of this line might be closer to what you want & it’s a bit cheaper

Eliza - great minds thinking alike. Gorsuch is one of my favorite aspirational catalogs. I did look at the jackets, many beautiful things, not the exact style and way too spendy. But it that the most gorgeous catalog or what?!! Really gorgeous things!!

Fashintern - I look at all suggestions but no, I would not buy something costumey. There is a fine line for me to walk, I want something that references a period feel but is modern, beautiful and well made. I think part of what makes the difference is the quality, construction and fit with a respect for a period but not a literal adherence to a style. And then there is getting the proportions just right. That's why I don't want to surf ebay or etsy, photos just can't show that type of detail. Many pieces I gravitate to are designer d&g, st l, balmain, McQ. I can't afford that level except on super sale perhaps, but if they are putting it out there then other moderate designers may do a riff on them. Look at VB and others doing the Balmain blazer. But that level of quality and construction is what I am after.

Jane - thank you I did look at poetry they have they long washed black velvet. Not quite the style I imagine but lovely and would fulfill the function but it's really a dark charcoal and I'm not sure I would not be better with a true black. But it's very lovely and has incredible reviews. Tempting to try!!
