Help me find summer dresses

Hi YLF,

Summer has FINALLY arrived in Toronto, and, much like Suz, I went to put on my casual summer dresses this week and realized that i am bored to death of them, having worn them 1-2 times a week for the past two summers.

For work summer wear, I am sorted between end of season sales and thrifting.

But I need weekend/casual dresses that are midi length, flared, higher waisted (I have a short waist.) Incredibly, my dresses from 2 years ago are from Old Navy and have an amazing fit, but they don't sell that style anymore, alas.

Looking for some that are reasonable quality and which I can shop easily online in Canada (so no Boden.) Any ideas?

I hav this Gap dress that is nice and lightweight. There is another colorway. Also, Nordstrom Rack has a casual dress brand called beachlunchlounge that I like. It’s *very* casual though.

If there is something from Boden that appeals to you, don't dismiss them. They are actually very easy to order from, and it's free shipping if you spend a certain amount. No tax, no duties. Comes in 3-4 days. And they have the actual garment measurements online, so it's easy to determine your size. I also think they'll provide more info if you contact them, but I haven't done that either... just think I've seen a comment here.

I have not had to return to them, but Suz has. I think it's a bit pricey, not sure if it's "difficult".

i haven't seen this Madewell dress, but there is something about it that i really like.
i know you said not Boden, but i got the Amelia a week ago, (an Angie top pick) and i LOVE it...for me it a true dress up/dress down dress...
if the Boden dress hadn't worked out, i was considering this Karen Kane dress (also comes in other colors) or this Amazon dress...(assuming that Amazon ships to Canada or that Amazon Canada has this dress)....

What about Joe Fresh? I was in to pick up some socks and noticed a couple of long striped sleeveless tank dresses, 100% cotton. Also saw a cute shortsleeved tee dress on their website in pink and white “dip dye”.

I wear dresses almost everyday in summer and have had good luck with Joe Fresh and Old Navy.

Obviously these are not going to be 'investment pieces', but I am OK with that for a summer dress.

Maybe try brands sold by multiple vendors for best prices and shipping? For fit-and-flare, my favs are Maggie London and Eliza J. Lilly Pulitzer, too—although pricier. Don`t rule out summer maxis or jumpsuits! Check the sale links:

I gave up on dresses for this year and bought myself a couple of pairs of lightweight wide leg crops, below. I also have a lovely J. Crew skirt from last year that will carry me through quite a lot.

But Boden's easy to order from and excellent service in Canada, esp. on the east coast. (Takes longer to get to Vancouver). Last summer I tried and kept several items from them (below) and tried on and returned many more. Cost of returns felt worth it because I learned a lot about their cuts/ sizes in doing try-ons.

Suz - wide leg crops. Of course! I have them for work wear but somehow forgot to think about them for weekend wear. The ones you posted from Aritzia look great and I never look there- I will check those out.

Here for the cake - I agree, I don't need support high quality for summer, but I do want something that will lol and for reasonable well even after a sunset or two. These are all good options.

Here are the two new dresses I bought for this summer. For reference I am short waisted. These are work dresses for me but my workplace is casual - I was looking for comfortable transit commuting in the heat, and I’ll wear them with slip shorts and Uniqlo Airism tanks.

Do you have Target? All the Who What Wear range of dresses were 20% off this weekend and they do offers like that regularly. They had lots of shirt dresses, wraps etc, mostly in midi length.

What is is with dresses anyways? They are either too casual , or too dressy. Too long or too short. Too sexy or totally UN sexy. I'm still determined to find a few myself but am getting absolutely nowhere. I sometimes feel that dress manufacturers assume we are all tall and willowy, and have small breasts, a narrow waist and hips, and a flat stomach. I know about 3 people who look like that - what are the rest of us supposed to do??

I recently ordered a bunch or summer dresses from The Bay...all Chaps or Ralph Lauren, all were on sale as low as $49.99. I ended up keeping only one but they are good value and don't crease...varying lengths (all listed on the Bay web site) and sleeve lengths and neck lines.
