Help me define my style - YouLookFab Forum

Like many of you, I feel at a cross-roads with my style direction. I've been keeping pinterest boards of fashions that catch my eye for a couple years now. I was just looking at my Spring 2015 board and for the FIRST time, it looks really cohesive to me. Up until now, I have found my wardrobe to have a little of this and a little of that.

I have also noticed, that when I buy new items lately, they are tending to be of the style that I am showing on my Spring 2015 board. I am definitely heading in this deirection.

Basically, I am wanting to work with "this style" going forward into Fall 2015. Now my problem is I know it when I see it...but what is it called? I love how everyone has a list of words they can use to describe their style and I have NEVER been able to do that. I feel like I have finally got to the point where I can start creating a list of words that describe this style that I aspire to! LOL!

So I ask...dear Fabbers...what is this style? What words can I use to describe this new direction I am heading?

Whatever direction it is, I feel drawn there, too. Except with more color and pattern for me. I love the shapes and flow of the looks you've pinned.

I see the general aesthetic of retailers La Garconne and Steve Alan.
Basically what I'd call sideways trendy.
Something very current right now with a certain fashion set, but a bit off the mainstream.

Hi Marlene! I was both surprised and not surprised by your Pinterest board It's much more architectural than I'd have expected, but the organic feel seems spot on for you. There is an interesting mix of soft and stiff in these photos; for some reason for you I picture leaning more towards the soft side, with some structure coming more from tailoring versus garment fabric, but that could be off. These neutrals seem just right for you, I think you were doing a lot of those already yes? I also wonder whether you'd be happy with as much oversize as these outfits show. I'm drawn to a lot of the looks you've pinned too! Especially love how light everything looks. I hope you'll post some outfits as you head this way on your style journey!

Aida - yes I've been heading this direction for a while now. Mostly in tops with more "standard" styles of bottoms. But a month ago I purchased an asymetrical midi skirt and was hooked. I knew the direction I needed to go! I get what you are saying about tailoring vs garment fabric but I'm really excited by fabric texture and draping right now. But I think there will always be a healthy dose of classic tailoring in the mix. As far as over-size goes, I do have my own personal limits. I like to balance loose with slim so I'm not feeling overwhelmed. I have a small frame so I don't want the clothes to wear me. I know there will be challenges with this but when I get it "right"...it feels so RIGHT! Like Anna said...I like to be current but not mainstream.

So I've written down everyone's words on a poster and it's hung on my wall. I am going to use these words to keep me on path. Thanks everyone!

I think you'll have fun playing with fabric textures I like "current but not mainstream", been wanting more of that for myself too.
