help me decide what to wear tomorrow night

My husband and I are going to a Christmas dinner tomorrow night where there will be a little bit of everything from jeans and sweaters to slacks and "Christmas sweaters" to slacks and nice blouses.... Everyone seems to stop at dressy casual (if they even get that far). Last year I went more 'semi formal/cocktail" and felt overdressed and my husband has already informed me that he will not allow me to make him wear a jacket this year:-) This dinner really frustrates me because I see any Christmas party as a chance to dress up but then feel silly being clearly overdressed.
I think part of the problem is that I am probably in the younger 15% of attenders to this event and the other ladies seem to think holiday party means holiday sweater.

So, if you'll all indulge me. Please stand in front of my closet with me for my annual "what on earth should I wear" tantrum.

I don't want to wear jeans, but would not object to my skinnies as they are dressier looking. Should I just not care what everyone else is wearing?

Well done for wanting to dress up. Be confident that you look fab and hopefully everyone else will feel underdressed!.
I love the first outfit you posted especially the slouch boots. It's great as it is but i'm a bit of a colour girl, i'd add a bit of colour somewhere perhaps a necklace? x

I agree, I love any excuse to get a little dressed up! I also really like the first outfit. The oversized cardigan looks comfortable and makes your outfit a touch more causal, so no risk of looking overdressed.

queenie, I second the other ladies! I think what you chose is the ticket! Those other ladies who dress down just haven't discovered a place like YLF yet! You are an inspiration to them I'm sure.
BTW, I think your "attempt" at the edgy(can't remember now if that's the term you used?) outfit was just right! It definitely works!

Queenie, your outfit looks great! It's definitely not too dressy. The combination of the necklace, belt, and boots really makes the look. I say wear it with confidence.

I love the outfit in the picture and don't think it looks too dressy. I had the same wanted-to-dress-up-everyone-dresses-down problem for a house Christmas party last night. Ended up wearing a denim pencil skirt with a wine-colored top, black cardi, brown tights and brown slouch boots. With a long gold necklace, it the outfit hit the right note.

I am in agreement- The first outfit fits the bill, not at all overdressed!!!I think it would work for the occasion. I do not mind being a bit overdressed art a party. The casual boots make the outfit less formal but festive.

thanks everyone- that helps. you're all right that the boots and belt will keep me from looking too dressed up. I"m really excited about wearing my patterned brown hose- haven't had a chance to wear those yet
and, I wasn't at all trying to thumb my nose at the other ladies- they are all lovely women who I will enjoy spending the evening with. I just often feel like the overdressed one- and don't at all want it to be about gaining attention or flattery. I just love dressing as nice as I can for special events
