Help me choose a trench coat - YouLookFab Forum

Hi! This is my first post here I love the blog posts here - they match my philosophy (less is more!) perfectly.

Right now I'm looking for a trench coat online. I bought a trench coat once in high school but it didn't fit me right and I never wore it (sold it on eBay with tags still on!). I'm looking for one now, and wanted some tips and advice.

I'm 5' 3.5'' warm-toned Asian woman and slim (size 26 jeans), although I am not flat chested. I'm in my 20s and I'm looking for a classic trench, most likely in a khaki color and definitely not black. I think I want it to hit mid thigh, but I'm not really sure. I tried a 39" BR trench coat in store and it felt a little long. I'm looking to buy several coats online and then evaluating them at home, though a few of the coats are available at stores near-ish me so I might visit to try in store. Price is not a factor; I want to wear this coat as long as possible! With that, here are the coats I've narrowed my selection down to so far:

I'm partial to the stone colored ones, in particularly the first Burberry from Nordstrom and the Kirsten Blake (sp?). Not a sallow khaki or red. I lean towards the double-breasted trench coat.

Because you're petite, I think beware *extra* fabric - as with the Tommy Hilfiger. I'm thinking you'll want something neater.

What are your feelings so far about what you might want?

I think you're right about the Tommy Hilfiger so I won't order it. You're right that I'd like something neater. Now that I've thought about it a little more, I don't think I'd like the gabardine Burberry (#5). And I just realized #4 is the same as #1! Haha.

I think you're right about the red as well...I have a red peacoat, but for a trench a classic neutral color is probably the way to go! Ideally now I want to eliminate one of the Burberrys, but this list looks okay now:

I love Burberry trenches and if you have a venue close I could definitely go try some on. I find coats really difficult to shop for online. Take a peek at the Burberry website, the videos of each coat are quite helpful in seeing them from all angles.

Thanks guys! It turns out the store near me has the three styles I'm interested in (Buckingham, Mottram, Marystow) in most of the sizes and colors that should fit me, so I'll head into the store soon and try them out. I find it really helpful to look online beforehand though to figure out what I might like in advance. I wouldn't be devastated if the $100 DKNY ends up looking nice though ;D (I just ordered the other two from Nordstrom online).

Hi and welcome! I have a Burberry trench and It is one of my favourite wardrobe items. My only regret is not investing in it earlier. I wore it today and my teenage son told me my coat was "ninja" which is very high praise indeed.

I am 5' 4" and I got the shorter length and I think it is the Maryston? I went to my local Burberry store and the staff brought me the different styles and were extremely helpful in assisting me. When I put "mine" on it was total love from the get go. There is a fit and length for everyone so make sure you take your time to get the perfect one. I am cool toned so I have the black and it works with everything I have.

Get the most classic colour that suits your skin tone would be my advice. You can always add "trendy colour" later Do let us know where you end up.

I went to the Burberry store today and tried out all three coats. It was definitely helpful to look through all the coats online so I could tell them right off the ones I was interested in! For me the Buckingham worked better than the Marystow, but the one I loved the most was definitely the shorter Mottram! The SA told me that the 'Trench' color would be better for my skintone than 'Honey' and since that's the more classic color anyway, I didn't try the honey color. So today I came home with a size 0 Mottram! Size 2 would have been good too if I wanted to wear more underneath it, but I wasn't planning to. It fits really great, and I'm pretty sure it won't need any alterations. Best of all, it was 25% off the online price, so I saved $271 from the online price (including tax)! It pays to buy off season

I'll still wait till I get the DKNY and Kristen Blake and have time to get some second opinions, but I suspect it'll be tough to beat the Burberry! I'm starting to regret ordering the Kristen Blake because now the color looks weird to me, but returning Nordstrom orders isn't difficult so no big loss. :]

WELL, if you can go Burberry and are searching for something fashionable, you probably can't go wrong with Burberry. But it is good not to leave a retail stone unturned and try the other options, too.
