I'm doubting my act.

I just went to pick up my son from the kindergarden and on the way home found an iPhone. It was at the pathway leading from the busy carpark opposite one of the the city swimmingpools.

The screen is smashed, but the phone works.

My initial reaction was to pick it up and wait until someone calls the number (It's locked by code, so I can't dial any of the existing numbers to inform the person I have the phone.) so I can hand it back. I hate to think how the person who lost it will feel once s/he finds out the phone is not with him or her.

But, on the way home I started doubting whether I did the right thing. Perhaps I should have left it there... but at home at least I can keep it charged until someone rings it.

What would you do??

Should Ii take it back?? Leave it on the sidewalk near where I found it??

Thanks all... I guess it's easy to know what the good thing to do is, but even that can backfire.

Ceit, THANKS!!! Great article, I just skimmed over the bit most interesting for me. The problem is the phone language is German and I'm not that good with German - on the way home I had been practicing with my son what to say if someone rings that darn phone. Yeah, 6yo and mum with the teacher-student roles reversed.

I have made a decision to take the phone to the mobile operator (I can see the network) and let them try and recover whose it is. Or contact police. The language barrier is too much for me. I guess if there is any, they have a way to go through the code and work from there. I'm alone at home with my son and it's too hot to cycle to town with him, so I'm waiting for other adults who can babysit.

In the meantime the phone charging and I'm waiting

I think you did the right thing. Perhaps also leave a note where you found it with your phone number or stating that you took it to the police?

sinces its an iphone, they may use the locate feature and send a text via the phone with a contact number. i tried to do that with my ipad, unfortunatly it was not found by someone as honest as you.

Yes you did the right thing, and too bad it's an inconvenience to you. If we lived in a totally honest world, it might have been best to leave it where it is, but since we don't, you made the best choice.

PS Have you seen the commercials where people are "accidentally" ruining or losing their phones so that they can get the new iPhone 5? Maybe there's something fishy going on, lol!

I finally took it to the phone company when my husband came home to stay with our son. I cycled like mad in the afternoon heat - it was near 18:00 hrs and I had no idea how long the store was open. And when the guy at the store started removing the phone cover to take the card out I felt really silly - of course they could easily recover the details from the SIM card. No need crack the security code, for police or other complications.

I did not mention the phone had the photo of two boys diving into the swimming pool. Poor lady who lost the phone. And there were calls to it about 1.5 hrs after I had found it but the phone was on silent and neither I nor my boy heard it, one of them from - Papa. I hope they feel immense relief after what could not have been easy couple of hours.

With everything taken care of now I hope it's lesson learnt for everyone. I'm dehydrated, but happy And I'm eating huge ice-cream guilt-free, I need to recover.
