Hello, I'm Faith. I'm a Canadian who found this site on Pinterest, I followed a pin down the rabbit hole and ended up here. I'm 43, married, no kids. I've recently sold my business of 16 years and after wearing a uniform (and by uniform I mean polyester & steel toed boots, not like cute Westjet uniform!) for 16 years and then hiding behind the excuse that I can't have style because I wear a uniform, I can honestly say I am utterly lost, never in my life have I lacked direction as I do now. I am now on a mission to figure out what basics I need to buy, how to wear them, what color am I (I don't even know what that means) what's my personal style and then to enter a mall and not let my anxiety about shopping send me scurrying to the nearest bookstore for refuge. I feel like this site is great place to start and I welcome any advice!

Welcome, Faith. Angie suggests starting with your hairstyle ( do you need to update?), eyeglasses if you wear them, and a bra fitting. Next you might get advice here on your body shape. Think about how you would like to be perceived.

Hello and thanks everyone! Joy, yes I do need a hairstyle, I need an everything style. I'm really struggling with what's appropriate for my age. I read Angie's post on cropped jeans but I've got a big butt, do plus size wear cropped jeans? I did recently get a bra fitting and purchased bras in my new size. I literally don't know how I want to be perceived. What does that mean? I'm doing a lot of reading on this site!

Hi Faith ! Welcome. It's hard when it's just never been really thought about before. But you are here and here is good. You could try to go back on some older Angie posts to get some ideas. You are going to experiment , love some things and hate something's.....and you will find what you love !

I'm not sure how I want to be perceived either

Since you said you were on Pinterest, I would start by pinning outfits you like for summer, and create a separate board for winter. Just pin whatever you like. From there, I think some patterns will emmerge, and then you can go shopping.

You could also try to figure out what your body type is (hourglass, pear, etc.) if you don't already know, and then get some ideas about what looks good on your shape. That might help with shopping as well.

Welcome! You have certainly come to the right place. This is a very welcoming forum, so you'll find no shortage of people happy to help you.

I think the best place to start is to decide how you want to look. That sounds like a ridiculously obvious thing to say, but maybe you haven't thought about it before. Do you want to look bookish, preppy, romantic, hipster, etc? Do you like more polished looks, or more casual ones? What do you think you'd feel "at home" with? For example, I really like the look of soft feminine blouses, skirts and dresses, but in reality I'm much more comfortable in pants -- and when I do wear skirts, they tend to be structured. I feel more at home in more boyish styles.

Can you think of any women in your life whose style you admire? If so, what do you admire about it?

Secondly, take your natural shape into consideration. For example, the soft drapey blouses and womanly dresses that look so great on others aren't really a good fit for me anyway -- I have a short, straight figure and short hair. Having said that, there's always a way to make a look work if you really want it to.

Welcome. And you're wise to get the support of this community. Dive right in. Start wherever you feel comfortable. There all sorts of subject that helped me when I joined. Identifying inspiration outfits/looks, reflecting on descriptors to define your style, understanding your body type and color palette, understanding how you truly live and having the clothes for each type of activity (work, play, social, home life, etc. -- we call these capsules), editing what you currently have, etc. You'll get lots of support however you begin. Again, welcome!
