Hi! And Help! I’m already starting to sweat about the work’s Christmas meal! It’s my first one with this crowd due to Covid, and cos I couldn’t go last year due to a broken leg! What can I wear??? I’m plus sized (18/20), wear glasses (cannot wear contacts), I'm the oldest at 52 and have to wear flat shoes (argh!) AND I’m on a super tight budget… so yeah! HELLLPP!!!!! Please suggest something to make me look and feel glam!! TIA xx

Hi Nic -- I know well the struggle of trying to dress up when your footwear choices are limited!

It might help to know how dressy the event is and what time of day? What's your style -- what fabrics, colours silhouettes do you feel best in?

Do you have something in your closet that you think MIGHT work, or are you shopping for something new?

You describe it as a meal, so I assume much of the time at this event will be spent sitting at a table. I'd say this means putting the focus on polished hair and makeup and the top part of your outfit, as it sounds like that's mostly what people will see of you.

So, without knowing what you have in your closet already or how dressy this event is, here’s some general ideas
~oversized velvet top with black leggings
~red sweater with Xmas pin with your normal work pants
~a top with metallic or sequins will dress up anything as well

As for shoes, dressy velvet flats or a metallic flat are both good dressy options, but a nice patent leather flat is also a good dressy option.

I agree to focus on the top half. A skirt or pair of trousers you wear for work should be fine.

A few ideas again
- column of colour with a nice topper- eg black pants and top with a sparkly kimono
- simple dress with a scarf in a great colour on you
- knit top with trousers and a brooch and special flats.

I would look to wear something you already have with maybe one new addition to make it feel special.

Wear some pants or skirt that you have with a flattering top. Do not try for sexy. It just ends up looking cheap. I have seen this mistake at a lot of company Chistmas parties. This is a good time to wear the pearls or dangling sparkly snowflake earrings. I hear you on the flats. There are lots of refined dressy ones if you look or wear boots. Look at sheer socks popular now. But be warm enough. There is nothing cute about being cold. Check second hand shops lots of people got rid of dressy things they were not wearing during the pandemic. I bought a whole collection of burgundy velvet pieces at a consignment store sale and am wearing it today after a snowstorm. It feels warm and cosy and a bit dressy but can be worn with jeans.

Lots of us here wear flats.
What have you worn to this type of thing in the past? How would you tweak those outfits to make them better? I’m not saying you need to get back into them, but that might give people a place to start suggesting things that could work this year.
