Hi there, I've been exploring David Zyla's methods of color selection, and I think it's kind of neat; however, as usual I find it tricky to apply the tips to my hazel eyes. I love the idea of picking up your eye color in clothes, it looks so gorgeous on blue and brown eyed girls, but I find I look in the mirror and don't even know what color my eyes are really! Sort of bluey-greeny-gray, with a big brown-gold splotch in the middle. Based on feedback, I've figured out that navy blue (which seems to be in there), brights,esp. blue (not sure why that works, but seems to) and cool-leaning olive green seem to work, but do different things - depending on the day! The blue corresponds to Angie's advice for brunettes, and also Bobbi Brown's consultants tell me ink-blue liner is the way to go for hazel eyes.

Any other hazel-eyed girls figured out tricks to bring out their eye color, or have the same dilemmas with color? If anyone has read my other posts, you'll know I'm useless with color so perhaps it's just me!!

My eyes were blue when I was born, but they are now greeny-grey with a copper coloured ring around the pupil. They are pretty changeable with what I wear. I like grey, navy, and some greens too.

Ceit, your eyes sounds beautiful! It's certainly not a boring color, that's for sure. Perhaps I need to embrace the changeability as the way to go Thanks for the feedback!

I've heard that you can pick your metal color from your eyes. That brown-gold spot indicates you might look good in gold, would you agree?

What color is your hair and skin tone? My eyes are hazel too. I love how they change color in the light and depending on what I am wearing. But I have to admit the color of my eyes does not have an impact on what I wear.

DS2 has hazel eyes that change with what he wears. Green really makes them green. Orange also makes them green while red makes them grey. Embrace the ability to change them and experiment.

Claire, that's interesting. I wear alot of silver, but recently have started adding gold, and I find it works too.

Modgrl, my skin probably leans cool/pinkish, but my hair leans warm (dark chestnut brown; it can go quite orangey-red with the sun) and my eyes have both (cooler, but with that warm splotch in the middle). I find I don't fit into any color analysis category properly, which I wish I did! I was told by one analyst, I'm either a clear spring or a soft summer, which as far as I can tell are opposites! Good to know others don't bother with the eye part and still look fab!

My eyes more or less are along the lines of Ceit - but usually they look uniformly blue or green, now that my hair is red. (It seems to depend on the season, weather, color of my surroundings, and what I wear). For eye-makeup, I find metallics really make them pop - bronzes, coppers, metallic browns and blacks. Stuff that pulls up the secondary and tertiary colors. For shadow colors, pale pinks and peaches, coppers, and a flat electric pink or purple in the crease to warm up the colors and give some depth. I also like really bright turquoises and aqua eyeliners layered into blacks or dark browns. Makeup Forever makes some really nice ones.

Torontogirl, are you sure your eyes are hazel? I always thought hazel was greenish-brown, not blue-green with a splotch of brown in the middle. Wikipedia appears to have an eye colour chart (the "Martin Scale") and then goes into detail describing (with pictures) the various eye colours. I found it informative.

My eyes are a pale greenish-bluish-gray with a very dark limbal ring. Like yours, they appear different colours depending on what I'm wearing. Sometimes they appear ice blue, sometimes pale gray, sometimes definitely green (but never brown). I've never seen this as a problem. I don't really get what they mean when they talk about "bringing out the colour of your eyes", since I like blue and green and gray. If they appear more green today, or more gray tomorrow -- it's all good, you know?

I did notice something interesting recently. About five months ago, I had a small mole removed from my left upper eyelid. A very dark bruise developed right around the edge of the lid, by the lashes, which made it look like I was wearing very dark purplish-red eyeliner on that eye. A number of people commented on how very green my eyes looked. So, I do think it's true that for people like you and me who have a "mixed" type eye colour, judiciously-chosen eye makeup colours can certainly influence the colour your eyes appear.

My eyes were the blue on Level 4 at the far right until I was about 4-5 years old. Now it is more like Row 2, second from left (attached photo is my eyes, don't open it if photos of eyes creep you out!). My kids both have the deep blue eyes so far though, I hope it sticks for them.

Another hazel eye YLFer here. Mine are pure hazel, according to the chart Ceit just posted.....Row #1, the eye on the far right. They are a golden brown when you look at them from a distance, but up close they're actually a combo of light green around the outside with almost a star of dark green/brown (almost olive) in the center...and an outside ring that's almost teal in color.

As for dressing to my eyes, I've not paid too much attention to that. Browns of all shades are usually good for me, and whenever I wear green people notice my eyes more...because they change and become noticeably more green.

I think the nice thing about hazel eyes is that they're changeable, so it frees you up to experiment more with bringing them out.

Thanks Ceit and Az for those interesting links. And TG for posting this. I'd never looked so closely at my hazel eyes before! I'm going to pay more attention from now on.

What an interesting topic and chart. Without any close examination, I think my eyes are the revolution brown. But it sort of depends. Someone was asking me the other day if I thought I had golden brown eyes. My dog has brown eyes, but a lot of times they look pitch black; I've never seen human eyes look pitch black.

I knew a girl who had swimming pool aqua eyes. I have to tell y'all, I don't think intensifying that colour was the greatest of ideas. While striking, looking at her felt a lot like having acid thrown at you. Her eye colour made my eyes water.

Anyways, my question is what do you do if the colour that brings out your eyes makes you also look sick, complexion wise? I can imagine this being the case with many colours.

Another hazel eyed person here. Mine are like 'Kara', row 2 center. A grey/green/light brown mix. Eye makeup is the only thing I work around my eye color.

Aziraphale, you opened up a great question, and thanks to Ceit for providing that very enlightening chart, of which I think mine are the same color as yours, 2nd from the left in row 2, with just the slightest hint of blue appearing in the green and more of a blueish ring around, which explains why the blues should work.

Rachylou, I wonder the same - there are time when my hair seems to warm for the rest of me, or my skin too pink from my eyes and hair! This is why I wear neutrals all the time, I think!

This is fascinating! I looked at the Wikipedia link and Ceit's link. My eye color is closest to "Merle", third from the right in the blue-hazel row. But my ring is a little more pronounced, my eye color is dark blue - but the brown in the center is not grown, it's yellow. Most of the time, it just gives the appearance of lighter eyes, or greener or greyer eyes, in certain lighting. It would be fun to have hazel eyes, because what I think of as 'true' hazel - that brown-green color of a new leaf or stem - is so beautiful and seems kind of rare.

I also find so interesting is that the number of true-blue eyes in the States has declined over the past century. I wonder if that is because of the 'melting pot' population, or because of diet and chemicals/coloring in recent generations? My grandmother was born with violet (blue) eyes, but they turned hazel when she was five. They stayed that way until a few years ago, when she had eyedrops for a glaucoma procedure that turned her eyes a pure, ice-blue color. That was four years ago, and they've gradually darkened to a sort of grey-blue.

Back to the actual question, about makeup, my favorites for eyes: Sephora palettes, Urban Decay Naked shadow palette, Tarina Tarantino shadows are nice, too. I like that the colors always look rich, blend easy - and don't seem to have too much 'fallout'. I also love the aqualiners by Make Up Forever - I have a rich black color, a gunmetal shade, and a peacock green color - and they really and truly are waterproof. (Their mascara was very nice too - but I'm allergic to one of the ingredients.) I also go back again and again for L'Oreal and Revlon liquid liners and mascaras.

Blue eyes were actually a mutation that appeared about 10-11,000 years ago in the Black Sea region. Everyone with blue eyes can trace themselves back to that one person!

But because it is a recessive trait, it is dying out. In a few thousand years there probably won't be blue eyes people any more (well, unless we start gene splicing for eye colour!)

Hazel eyed, here. My eyes aren't often remarked on, but whenever I wear a mustard yellow top, folks almost always comment, 'cause they turn a cool shade of silvery sage. Most of the time they are grey/ green with gold, almost identical to the 'hazel' example on the Wikipedia page.

Cool colour chart! According to it my eyes are more of a green-hazel, second picture on the second line. Good colours for me are moss green, deep khaki/olive and mustard.

Runcarla and Molly, do you guys fall into the "warm" category in terms of skintone?

I've always avoided those colors as they are not my "season" (I know, so out of date, but it's imprinted in my brain since my mom did it in the 80s ...). Must try them this fall!

Hi Toronto girl. I'm a very pale skinned redhead and my skin looks pretty neutral when I'm in the buff. It's only when I put colours near my face that I can see that the warm colours make me look healthy whereas blacks and cool colours make me look sickly.

Daughter has hazel eyes, with a gray green color and a hint of brown gold in there, too. Teal, light silvery gray, blues and some greens highlight them well.

Another colour mutt, but I couldn't find my shade on the chart. I have a brown, blue and green, depending on the section of the eye. Purple and brown eyeshadow look best, I think, and a hairstylist recently told me that dark chestnut hair colour would make my eyes pop.

I'm glad you brought back this thread--I'd forgotten about it. Today I'd say I'm in the middle of the top line of brown-hazel.
