Hawaii travel capsule- Update WIAW at the end.

We leave next week for my daughter's 10 day Make a Wish trip to Hawaii. We'll be on Oahu the whole time, mostly Waikiki Beach, but 2 days on the northeast end of the island at the end.

Here's what I've pulled together so far. I don't tend to run hot or cold but I do prefer my feet uncovered and my arms covered.

Is the jean jacket overkill? Too casual? I keep hearing how casual Hawaii is, but I also already skew casual. The last outfit is what I planned for the loooooong travel day.

One dress I was planning to take got shrunk in the wash. I have a ruched waist, vneck black sheath arriving Monday that will come along if it fits.

Thumbs up on everything, Traci. The denim jacket is indispensable here in my book. Make sure your bathing suit and cover-up capsule are in good knick too.

Having lived in Hawaii and still vacationing once a year, I can tell you that you will not be out of place in anything. Cute summery dresses, board shorts and tee, ripped denim and tank top - it's all good. One all purpose topper for air conditioning (the grocery stores are freezing!) and evening breezes should be plenty. Just about everyone is in flip flops or cute flats. And the shopping is really great. The Ala Moana mall has lots of upscale stores to browse and a fantastic international food court.

If you can get off Waikiki beach and go to Kailua for a day (20 minute drive or can take a bus) you will NOT regret it - it's a world class beach and a really cute little town. Plus the drive is really scenic. Waikiki is nice but super packed with tourists and a little OTT.

How old is your daughter? There is a lot to do, including the zoo and aquarium and the Chinatown area. The sea life park is expensive but nice. Wish I was coming with you! Feel free to PM if you want more unsolicited advice.

Angie, I have 2.5 swimsuits. I'm hoping to find a rash guard when we're there. Suit options around here are pretty slim pickings this time of year. I've got two high waisted bikinis that I ordered online that I'm super excited about, having worn one pieces since I was 8 years old. I may need to throw a couple of extra cover ups in the mix. I'll also have my eye out for a few fun dresses while we're there. And thanks for the upvote on the hair. I'm loving it so far!

Una, my daughter is 18, and her 14 year old sister is along for the ride too. We've had so many offers to tag along, you wouldn't believe;) We'll have a car the whole time, so we definitely plan to do lots of exploring away from Waikiki, I will check out that town. We're all foodies, so feel free to hit me with all your "must eat" places.

Make a Wish scheduled a couple of events for us. Tickets to Sea Life Park is one of them. Then we have a Luau that looks like it is almost on top of the animal park. We've also got a boat ride of some sort chartered, I don't know if we're with a group, or alone, and also a spa day. They scheduled all those things into 2 days, so I'm going to try to spread it out a bit.

Enjoy your trip. I haven't been in years, but I spent most of my time in loose cotton sundresses, as I found it quite hot and muggy. Besides the time in the water, of course.

I've only been there once, and it was for 10 days in January but the climate is pretty uniform year-round I think....and what you're planning to take looks perfect. Agree that having a denim jacket and/or sweater is a good idea although you will probably only need it indoors. I was a little surprised (and delighted) at how little it cooled down at night. Have a wonderful trip, it's a stunningly beautiful place. If you are into gardening at all take the time to look around at all the tropical plants you will see..and yes lots of great places for foodies. Something I didn't realize until I went there is how ethnically diverse it is, in ways that are very unlike most of mainland USA. That means SOOO many interesting food choices!

We went for the first time a couple years ago, in November, to Kauai. I was surprised how cool it was. I mostly wore shorts and tees, but also a windbreaker a lot.

Lovely capsule Traci. Bringing a jean jacket is a smart idea... especially for indoors in AC or breezy evenings at the beach. Your new hair style is absolutely stunning. Wishing you and your daughter a wonderful trip.

If you can eat breakfast at the Kakaako Kitchen near the Ward Center, they serve amazing local food. Also Cinnamons in Kailua has red velvet pancakes! The International Market in Ala Moana is really the best easy place to sample different cuisines. There is no end to the places you can eat. If Keo's is still open somewhere the Thai food is to die for, and Roy's is a local favorite for upscale dining in Waikiki.

I'm sure you'll find great additional swimwear there, Traci. The best time to buy a bathing costume here is Feb/Mar.

Your travel capsule looks great, Traci! I lived on Kauai for a few years, so I'm feeling nostalgic! I think your denim jacket and a light cardigan will be perfect for breezy evenings. So many restaurants are open air dining, so no A/C, but cool breezes or light rain showers are always possible.

Seconding Una's recommendation of Ala Moana Mall in Waikiki if you're looking for upscale shopping. Otherwise, breezy sundresses, shorts, tees, and sandals are perfect!

What a fantastic travel capsule. You look spectacular and from my only visit to Hawaii many many years ago I know you will fit in perfectly and feel really comfortable.

We just got home yesterday. Here's what I actually wore.

1. First day, exploring the resort. This skirt was a wildcard, thrown in the suitcase at the last minute. I was worried it would feel too dressy because I'd heard so often how casual Hawaii is, but the little bit dressy felt perfect. The area we were in had about 90% Japanese tourists, and I just loved all the polished, casual styles I saw on them.
2. First beach day.
3. Sightseeing. This linen dress was the mvp of the trip. I reached for it over and over.
4. Jet lagged early morning breakfast run. Puffy eyes included.
5. Hot sunny day at the zoo. Linen dress and new sun hat from the resort shops.
6. The silk dress came out for cocktail hour.
7. Another beach and swimming pool day.
8. Out to dinner.
9. I picked up this top at a swap meet. I wished they'd had more patterns in this that appealed to me. I'm considering overdyeing it at home.
10. Fun swap meet pants!
11. The base layer for my travel outfit. Once we got to the airport I added leggings and jean jacket. It was a perfect travel outfit. I didn't snap a pic for my travel outfit there.
12. The view from our room. We saw rainbows almost every day!
