I dye my hair myself, in the interests of economy. Over time, my hair tends to get blonder and blonder in an effort to cover the roots.

Have I gone too blond this time?

Anne, I can't see your photo...

You are courageous to lighten your hair yourself! I wasn't brave enough to do self-color when I was blonde - the one time I tried it with Sun-In, the results drove me right back in to a salon.

I'm not an expert.. but I think that maybe yes... you have a gorgeous tanned skin and the hair washes you out a bit..

It's pretty and not overly blonde. I do think a slightly darker shade would make the most of your skin tone and eyes though. The color now is similar to your skin, so it doesn't create much contrast.

It looks good to me Anne, I would maybe try a shade darker when your (light) tan begins to fade. I'm impressed with your DIY efforts, are you a natural dark blond?

Oh, I was imagining a flat bleached blonde, which I never really like on anyone. This is fine. Very shiny and natural looking. A shade darker would probably look nice with your olive skin, but this looks pretty too.

I have gone platinum blonde in the past, not at my own hand but by hairdressers in Japan who were not used to dealing with caucasian hair. (I called it my nordic look!)

For those of you who suggested going a darker shade - how do I do this (at home)?

I think just adding some lowlights in ash or golden brown throughout your hair will help, I actually think burgundy or dramatically contrasting strands throughout would look really good with your complexion and eyes, but light ash brown is easier to maintain.

You can DIY with one of those highlighting caps, just make sure to pull out small strands and keep the cap as close to your scalp as possible.

Carolina, thanks so much for responding to my question even though that thread was a few days old! I don't think I'm brave enough for burgandy but I'm sure I could go golden brown. I think I've had ash before (when an Australian stylist was toning down the Japanese hairdresser's efforts) and that didn't look as great.
