Thank you Jem, pattern review is such an incredible resource (even if the site's a complete pain to navigate). It does sound very tempting but pretty expensive.
rae thanks for starting - i'll be interested in the feedback! you know, depending on how DIY you are and what type of effect you're going for, there's lots of info on stenciling out there. and if you combine various layers of designs and colors the effects can be quite soft and subtle (not just the typical hi-contrast hard-edged stencil stereotype). You can add embroidery, applique, studs, etc. if you like as well.
Here's a tee i stenciled over and embroidered Alabama Chanin style. I have no idea what end effect you're going for, but thought i'd toss the idea out there for you. Have fun - i'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! steph
