Has anyone had a dry haircut?

I had one today (with same gal Theresa whom I've been going to for 7 years),and the effect is amazing. Very choppy and textured - but still soft. You'll see it soon

They cut your hair dry, not wet. Ring a bell?

I used to get a combination of wet and dry cutting when I wanted it to look choppy. My stylist would trim and clean it up while wet, then do the real cutting and shaping while dry.

Probably wouldn't do it again though.

I have. Because my hair is so slippery and straight, I have had it razored dry to add texture. Not a pleasant sound and apparently somewhat damaging, but it had the effect I wanted!

I only cut my hair dry and I have several clients as well who would never have it done any other way!!

There's a place in Ballard that specializes in it but they flat iron your hair first. I think I went twice but since my hair has some natural wave it was just ok. They went to great lengths to explain the process and philosophy.

I almost always get this done (unless I am having colouring or something) because it is cheaper as you don't have to pay for the wash. Or is this not nearly the same thing!?

My stylist cuts part of my hair wet (usually the base of whatever length I'm getting), and then does all the texturing dry (I expect that the curls make it hard to fully cut dry) to make sure the curls sit at the best places. Looking forward to seeing your new 'do!

Anne, I still have my hair washed and coloured! But it's dried off before it's cut.

Wow. I'm behind the times by the sounds of things. I don't think that I will ever have my hair cut wet again. (I'm definitely looking a little more punk these days). I am sooooooooooo happy I married a bloke who loves a gal with short hair. It would be grounds for divorce if he didn't.

I've had it done several times since I've gone short.

Hee, there must be something in the air. My hair grows so fast, my stylist learned to take off a little "extra" - I start out quite short, but then I can make it to week 6 not looking like a shaggy yeti type creature.

I'm contemplating going shorter and choppier again. Not close to Angie's length, but a much shorter and choppier bob than the sloppy grown out look I'm currently sporting. Definitely above chin length.

"My" Theresa - a different stylist than Angie's - cuts my hair wet first, blow dries and flatirons it, and then *really* goes to work while it's dry cleaning up and adding a ton of texture. She's had great results on my hair from razor cuts, but I think we usually do the razor part while it's wet.

I always had partially dry hair cuts when my hair was about chin length to make sure that the curls were defined and sitting right. Now that my hair is longer it's not so important. But it definitely looked better shorter when the "fine tuning" was done dry.

I have had a partially dry cut. Not when I had short hair though--- when I was in my short hair phase I was going to a different stylist than I do now and I don't think she was nearly as good. I have had bangs cut/razored dry even up to 10 years ago, so it must be something that has been around for awhile. I actually don't mind the pull and sound of the razor, but then at the time we were trying to damage my hair! One of my favorite ever dry cuts was about shoulder length and had the ends texturized and layered dry and then very small pieces cut about 1.5 inches long through the crown into the under layer. When I used a vent brush and blow-dried the top I would "scrunch" the hair underneath. Gave me a lot of body-- like teasing but much more subtle.

I will have to go back and look at the hair in your blog post again! You might tempt me to go short-- my hair is so silky that it never looked rock'n'roll enough, but maybe this would add some more texture.

I never had this before but this time the hairdresser did the same as Kari was explaining.
I find that it gave a lot of more sturcture to my fine hair.

I go to the same stylist as Angie and was in there on Thursday and she did some dry cutting on me for the first time. She colored then washed then cut then dry then razored. I'm finding its giving my fine hair some nice texture without all the layers. So far I'm happy with it.

I have, but not for a long time. I always need some dry trimming when my stylist is done because of my super straight hair.

Yes re the dry cuts. I've only had a couple of stylists work that way over the years - but it makes so much sense!

They can work with the waves, cowlicks, whatever, and know in advance how it will lie/fall when finished.

Marley, they cut your hair when its dry and not wet.

Kari, usually I have my hair coloured, washed, cut, dried and re-textured. This time it was colour, wash, dry, cut. I will never look back again!

Yep I've had a dry cut, more like a twist and hack cut but the technique really worked on one of my past crops. I think it's possibly more common with wavy hair as the stylist can see how your hair kinks.

Love the new cut Angie, I'm going shorter next time to, I still have too much hair!

Angie, I've had dry cuts before, but the end result was not choppy and textured like I prefer.

My hair texture is very thick and stick straight. My stylist always washes it first, then cuts it scissors-over-comb while it's slightly damp. Then she uses thinning shears to point-cut the top. This method produces LOTS of texture!

Thanks, Barbara! I guess a dry cut creates a piecey and chopped effect on fine hair? You were blessed with a thick head of hair like my husband. He is 42 and no signs of balding or a receding hairline. He is *very* lucky.

Years ago I had a hairstylist who only did dry cuts (at least as far as I know), he always cut mine with a razor instead of scissors too. I don't really remember the exact technique (I think Julie's 'twist and hack' might come close), and I always loved the result.

Yes, I've had this done, although the longer my hair is, the more often it is cut wet vs dry.

I've had my hair cut dry before. Not sure if it was done correctly though. It was more out of time constraints...I was in a hurry. She didn't wash it. I just sat down, draped the smock and she cut it. It was "okay" I can imagine it would be great with a short, textured cut like yours, Angie.

I can't do razoring either....makes my naturally curly hair frizz.

I had my first one a few months ago, and LOVED it! It's great for curly/wavy hair, because they can see my curl pattern and work with that, instead of just guessing and hoping!
