Has anyone ever been accosted...

...by that nail guy in the mall? The guy who takes your nail, buffs it with some magic contraption, puts cuticle conditioner on it and leaves your nail looking tremendously shiny and lovely and feeling like silk? (He was quite the flirt, I might add, saying that he was going to make my nail shine "like my beautiful eyes", but I digress.)

What is this magic buffer? Does anyone have one?

I didn't give the magical man enough time to explain anything to me (what is it, how much does it cost, etc.), but ever since, I've been looking at and feeling that nail with much admiration.

I never have such interesting experiences in the mall! Maybe because I am often trailed by three rambunctious kids . . .

I used to buff my nails. You can buy a nail buffer. They look like a fat squishy foam nail file.

Yep. Same guy. (How is it that he works on both coasts?) I have just the buffer and it does work somewhat better than the much cheaper version that can be had at any CVS.

When I do the buffing myself, the amazing shine doesn't last nearly as long it did after I was accosted, however, so I'm not sure what his secret was. Maybe it was all that unctuous charm...

I would go to bigger drugstore or someplace like Ulta. If I remember correctly there four levels of sanding on it. You started with the roughest surface and worked your way up to the smoother one.

I have a similar one-- that does the same thing. However, once I got addicted to it... my nails started breaking. Broken nails look worse than un-shiny ones! This might be because I keep my nails long. If you keep em short... then by all means go get one at Wallgreens or Rite Aid!

April, he must fly back and forth to charm us. Your DS already outed your purchase of the mall man's nail buffer, after watching my experience. And my own sweet DS said, "Why did he call you beautiful?" Nice. He'll never be a nail buffing mall man with that attitude.

Sparky, surprisingly, I had three kids in tow as well. But he managed to catch me off balance and draw me in. Before I knew what was happening, he was already half-way done.

Thanks for the tips! Sounds like buffing isn't that great for the nail. Too bad. It sure looks lovely.

Yes, DS is very fond of the magical ability of that buffer to create smooth shine out of dull ridges. If you Google "nail buffer mall guy" you'll find lots of blog posts by the similarly accosted...

I thought the buffing would be healthy since it seems to stimulate circulation? I keep my nails very, very short, so breaking wouldn't be likely to occur no matter what.

It's likely the company Seacret, which is a dead sea mineral company. You can go on ebay and find the buffers fairly cheap. They are 4-sided buffing blocks, you can also hit up Sally Beauty Supply and buy them for around $5. Cuticle oil can be as simple as olive oil, jojoba oil, or a brand name oil like Solar Oil.

If you buff too much it thins your nail and weakens it. That's why they can break. You just have to show restraint

I got a accosted when I was in a mall in Dallas and he kept me there for ages trying to bargain with me. It was that dead sea stuff.
the amazing stuff was the eye cream ..same company I think...it really did take the lines away but $500 a bottle...I'll keep the lines for now...botox would be cheaper.

We've got one too! He dared to interupt a girly gossip once and my friend who has acrylic falsies gave him 'the look' and said do I look like I need my nails buffing! x

omg, what an excuse to accost attractive women! he probably doesn't even work for the company I have a nail buffer and like it; I'm careful not to overdo it. The only time I get accosted is by Romanian gypsies wanting money...

I've never seen the guy or heard of nail buffers but had a great time reading this post! I'll be on the lookout for him if he visits Seattle

I'm ashamed to admit that I was talked into buying not one, but two of those kits from a fast talking sales girl one Sunday afternoon when I had popped over to the mall to try on jeans. It works fine, but I never used it regularly and it was way over priced (IMO)
Now I put my hands in my pockets as I whiz past that cart in the mall

Sihaya, I'm willing to bet money that the nail guy is in your mall. Probably not the upscale mall, but the standard one. The company must have a long list of criteria for its sales staff...
Needed: Mall Nail Guy. Must be willing to walk up to complete strangers and make them believe you think they are beautiful. Must be pushy but flirt all the while so it's not perceived as caustic. Swift talking, beautiful people with deeply compelling eyes need only apply.

I think we have the same guy, too! He accosted me once, but he had some kind of miracle salt scrub instead of the buffer ("have you ever heard of the Dead Sea?......"). It did make my hand feel nice, but so does the $5 sugar scrub from Wal-greens.

I think I remember being accosted by those dead sea guys with my mom when I was in high school. She ended up buying lotion from them because she couldn't say no to "good looking young people."

Yep. Same guy - same MO. I ended up with 3 kits (3 for the price of 2 type of "deal"). I kept one, gave one to my daughter, and the last to her best friend. I found that this is not a good way to treat my fingernails (thins them too much) but is fabulous for my toenails. They look burnished and gleaming - perfect for sandal weather.

Cookie - I never thought to buff my toenails. Great tip for when I don't have time for a pedicure!

But the magic buffer they sell is very expensive you can buy a cheaper magic buffer on other stores!

There are so many pushy sales people at carts in the center of my local malls. I avoid them all. The nail buffer one, the dead sea scrub one, the peal on nail polish one. It gets tiring after a while.
