Today, 1 March, in Bulgaria is Baba Marta Den - Granny March Day. Everyone puts on a wristlet in red and white cotton - all types of designs and styles available, on their left wrist. This is for Good Health. We wear this wristlet either until we see the first stork or 21 March - whichever comes first. Then we remove it and tie it to a branch of a tree. It is fun to see all year round, these wristlets tied to trees, still holding on even through winter. This is an ancient tradition that encourages good health and signifies the impending Spring. On the streets greetings of 'Chestita Baba Marta' can be heard all day between friends and acquaintances. As I live in a small town - this is repeated quite often :). This is one of the fun and interesting ancient Bulgarian traditions I am embracing here on the Black Sea.
