What a surprise! Thank you, Angie. We just got back from a week in Maine, so I've been catching up on your daily entries and now just beginning some of the posts I've missed. So far I'm celebrating by getting lots of phone calls from family and friends starting with my son in Tokyo at 7am...besides trying to catch up on laundry, etc. from the trip. Now I qualify for the Kohl's senior citizen discount, LOL!

(Inge, Kohls, is a U.S. Department store, and it's a common custom for stores to offer discounts to people over a certain age--called "senior citizen discounts".

I recall my dad's excitement when he went to buy cat food and litter at the pet store and the kid at the register said "wait sir, I forgot to give you the senior discount!" Seems like people are either thrilled or devastated when they hear that for the first time. I plan to be in the first category.

I have actually never heard of discounts on clothing before, but I guess it can happen. It's more typical to have discounts on things like entertainment (movie passes or amusement parks), or public services like transportation. But I guess if there can be a pet store discount, there can certainly be a clothing discount.

My parents looked forward to their 70th birthday because in the city they live in (in China) they can ride all buses for free and get senior discounts to any parks which could be very expensive.

I bet the senior discount starts a lot younger here because there's no way you are over 70!?

Thank you, everyone, for the birthday greetings. San, I'd love a "hot mama" discount, especialy at a grocery store! 62 sounds awfully old, doesn't it!?

Jennifer, the "lobsta" was just wonderful! We ate several times at a little lobsta hut next to the wharf where the fishermen were coming in with their haul. We sat next to the sea at wooden picnic tables and stuffed ourselves. We also attended a fishing family dinner in the same town (Harpswell) and had more lobster and outstanding fireworks.

Most of our time was exploring the coast or Acadia. We did get to Old Port in Portland and did some exploring, but I needed more time. I also got to the Burberry store in Freeport, but didn't find the coat I wanted. Again we ran out of time, partly because DH actually wanted to eat a meal instead of more shopping :o)

So we had a wonderful time, great weather, food, hiking, quite a bit of shopping but not much actual purchasing...DH's dream vacation, LOL
