The older I get, the less stuff I want. Shoes and bags (and clothes) included. I've moved twice in 6 years and that itself forced major reassessments of how much I really needed to keep . Nothing makes me feel worse and self-indulgent than piles and piles of possessions. Yet accumulation creep occurs if I don't keep an eye on it.
I'm on holidays from work for another few days and am finishing up a review and editing of my summer stuff. Carol's post today about scarves spurred me onto the last leg of it - my scarf and handbag collection. I also saw an ad for Jennifer Aniston's new dry shampoo which showed her pulling it out of a gorgeous supple, big brown suede bag. Kind of seasonally conflicted, but with her grey tank top and jeans, it looked so luxe and fabulous. This was the start of it all .....I only want a very few gorgeous quality bags. Sure Lisa, you say that every year .
Am I the only one who finds less use for handbags as years go on? I know Angie is a huge bag lover, but I feel she's a bit unique here;).
I finally got rid of a few 'evening' type bags I was hanging onto in case I suddenly got invited to a wedding - none of these bags were of any quality to note, and I haven't attended a wedding in probably 30 years, so I think I'm safe in letting them go. I passed on some 'novelty' type bags ( nylon , canvas , etc ) from a line I used to rep years ago, and some cross body phone/wallet/bag things that don't even fit my current phone . I'm not the one-bag-fits -all person who carries the same one all season (ahem, my late mother) but too many colours and styles and sizes are just overwhelming to me, and too fussy. Most of the time, when I'm running errands etc, I don't even take a purse now. I have a vintage-y gold Coach zip around wallet that holds my phone and a tissue and a lipgloss, and that's what comes with me to the grocery store. In fall and winter, my phone and a few cards in a small case go into the pocket of my coat.
Carol's scarf post also resulted in a scarf cleanse and I'm now down to 5-6 silk scarves . I went through my collection with each move, but I bet I haven't worn a silk scarf since our first move 6 years ago. I feel old. Or smarter?
Curious to hear about your experiences with bags and changes in lifestyle/aging etc!
