Spent A LOT of money yesterday at a new salon for cut & color. The color is okay. A bit dark, but I like the reddish tint.

However, I do NOT like the new cut. Right now I'm feeling it's that awful round bubble shape - those of you with curly hair know what I mean. Very Flashdance. I went from Elaine to Flashdance. Why????

She cut a few BANGS! On curly hair! Ugh. She said my top was flat and I need volume, but bangs? Really? I think I can push them back and blend them, but they're adding to the bubble shape. It's going to take FOREVER to grow them out.

I'm freaking out a little. I know I need to let it settle and play with styling it and see if I can figure out how not to look like I'm in an MTV video from the 80's. I did due diligence on this stylist, and had high hopes.

No picture. I'm feeling very fragile today.

Oh, Tara - I'm SO sorry. This is so frustrating!!!

When you've had a chance to soothe yourself a little, how would you feel about going and telling her (or the salon) how you feel? I don't think you should have to pay full price when it seems you got peculiar service (poor communication).

I am sure you probably look much better than you fear. Remember that the hair sometimes takes a few days to settle, so things may not be as bad as you think. Crossing fingers for you!!!

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way! And shame on the stylist for cutting bangs into curly hair! Did she ask you if you wanted more volume on top and then cut the bangs? That's definitely not alright - sounds like a stylist that simply doesn't know what the do's and don'ts are with curly hair. I say let it settle a bit before you try some styling ideas. Did you wash and style your hair like you normally do yet? My hair looks always different after the first wash, maybe it's the same for you.

Ugh - sorry! Maybe you can have the bangs blended even more so that they are just face framing on the side when you push them back.

Oh, bummer! I feel for you. I have wavy more than curly hair, but still - some folks just don't take the curl into proper consideration. And it seems to take forever to grow out because of it's springiness. I have been suffering sub par hair for the better part of a year now and just take solace in knowing it will, in fact, grow back. Huge hugs.

I'm sorry Tara. I add to others' comments that it takes a while for hair to settle after a cut. Particularly when more layers are added. My bad cuts are almost always worse than what I think initially. And also, a bad cut can often be salvaged by some tweaks. Hugs to you.

oh, I'm so sorry Tara. I had a cut a while back that I had a hard time with and didn't leave the house all weekend. It is disappointing... I'm sure it will settle in to itself in a couple days.

I definitely agree with going back to the salon for a fix or a full or partial refund, once you've had a day or two to see what the damage is.

Oh, Tara, It is Fragile Friday for us! I'm so sorry you don't like the cut... I KNOW you did not ask for a hair bubble, and it's frustrating when someone sort of goes off and does their own thing with *your* har. :T

My thoughts:

- As you said to me, it probably doesn't look as bad as you think. You have great features and specs, and those draw my eye more than your hair, anyway.

- I agree with the suggestion to talk to the stylist/salon and let them know you aren't happy. Something was clearly lost in translation along the way... and cutting bangs on curls seems like a really rookie error.

I relate to horrific haircuts on curly hair!!! Think "oh, just a little razor cutting on the ends, for 'texture' - don't worry!" and then coming home with the dreaded shapeless welfare disaster, especially once you've washed out the careful hide-all blowout and saw its true nature. This is the reason I stayed far away from salons for YEARS. I was the only one allowed to touch my hair - just trimmed the ends once a year.

Personally, I wouldn't go back to the same stylist (why didn't she know what she was doing in the first place?) I would try to work with styling gels and creams, and if that doesn't help, going to someone who is GOOD with curly hair and seeing if they can help fix is so it grows out more attractively. And remember: thin headbands can be your friend, as can fabulous hats!

Silly question Tara, have you washed your hair yet? Sometimes washing the product out and styling the cut yourself makes it feel more you! I'm sorry you are feeling down.

My sympathies, Tarzy. A bad hairstyling experience is a miserable thing. I echo Julie's suggestion to wash and style it yourself to maybe regain a little feeling of control over the situation. In a day or two it probably won't feel quite as bad and you can do a more objective damage assessment then.

Aw Tara- that sucks. Although I can't imagine you looking bad in anything, it's horrible to feel self conscious. I hope that this works itself out in some way soon so you can be back to feeling fab.

tara, i know it is tragic to have a horrible cut and youll have to wait a while to be ready to cut it again, what with the ptsd and all...BUT...you are gorgeous! you DO have amazing eyes and a very covetable silhouette. i'll bet you are the only one i know who can rock an off-the-shoulder sweater and play flashdance. "what a feeeeling!"

Oh no! I hope you can find some piece with your hair while it grows out. Even with a hairstylist I know and have used previously, I am never happy with my haircuts at first. It's always too much change for me, even when it's a trim.

So sorry, It's so frustrating when you don't like a cut and have to wait for it to grow out!

But thank goodness, it will, and hopefully once you're over the shock you'll decide that you like it better than you thought. Sometimes a change just takes some getting used to.

And sometimes the hairdresser really screws up and shaves a bare spot behind your ear- don't ask me how I know!

So sorry for the self-pity party. I have calmed down now, as has my hair.

You were all right - I washed and styled it myself, and while it's still not my favorite cut, I think I can scrunch it into submission.

I'm sorry Tara! I hope it'll relax a little with a few washes. I have wavy/curly hair and I do beat my bangs into submission (actually, it's not hard at all). I use a blow dryer with a directional nozzle. Maybe just straighten them a bit just until they grow out?

Ohhh I am very familiar with the shape you describe!! I'm glad to hear it's calmed down a bit. I was going to suggest what Kristine said, perhaps doing a half-blow dry on just the bangs will help keep them under control.
