Haircut advice wanted

Hi there! My hair has been super long for a few years now (pics 1-2) and I'm pretty certain I'm ready to cut it.

I'd like it to be long enough that I can still do fun updos (3-5), but short enough to do authentic looking pin curls (6-7). I also want to be able to have my rocker chick vibe sometimes 8-10).

Am I asking too much? How short would be too short do you think?

From what I have seen on other threads, your hair is a main accessory, so you are right in considering everything you'd want to do with it before cutting any length off.

I would say no shorter than pic 8 or 9. That still gives you length to play around with but it's not as much as you have now (pic 1-2).

Fun! I think it will be hard to accomplish all three goals. If you add the layers needed for the rocker look you're going to have a hard time doing the pin curls without using a lot of product. I think you'll still need to keep it below shoulder length for updoes.

I think #8 is too short for an updo like #4. I think you'll need the length of #10 or slightly longer. How about looking at Kate Moss for some inspiration? She's not so into updoes, though.

From what I've read, layers are essential for pin curls. Anyone have personal experience?

Good point about the updo's though, would probably have to stay a bit below shoulder length.

I'm not sure exactly why, but I can't stand Kate Moss...

Hmm, interesting. I feel like they would need to be longish layers, especially around your face so you have enough to sweep back and under. What about looking at other images from the 40s or someone like Dita Von Teese to see what length their hair is when down?

Layers are essential for pin curls? Oh, that to me is a question for the hair stylist. I can't imagine how that works - how you grab sections to pin up.

Today is hair day. I'm learning questions I never even knew to ask.

My hair is around the length of #8, maybe a bit longer and I can do curls easily (my hair is naturally wavy/curly) and put it up. I do have some layers, but not too many, aside from the front fringe, so I think it would work.
