Haircut advice? (ETA: wavy styles)

I'm overdue for (and dying for) a haircut. I'm thinking that I'd like something a little bit edgy, and definitely more intentional looking that what I have. But it's unlikely that I'll put much effort into it (just being honest).

In fact, I just called and made an appointment at the local Beauty College for tomorrow morning.

Here's the hair I have, and a few cuts that I'm considering. Would you mind helping me choose what to ask for?

I'm pretty sure I want an inverted bob of some sort - my main questions are: Should I try bangs?, How severe should the stacking in the back be? And should I have it layered on the sides?

Or feel free to suggest something entirely different

Added: Thanks for your suggestions! I printed off #2 to take. But after comments about my curly hair, I looked up some wavy inverted Bobs. Here's a few of my favorites (9-13). Should I go for one of these instead? My daughter is smitten with 10, but my hair isn't really that curly - and I'm not sure it would hold a curl if I was to curl it.

Are you willing/able to blow dry and flat iron it each day Amy? The reason I ask is that your natural hair has a bit of wave to it I think and some of these styles you are showing would need some styling to achieve the look.

I like #2 a lot. I don't know about hair, but would the shorter length work better for the RATE-ish look you may want to sport some days?

Great question Shannon - I am willing to flat-iron and blow dry my hair a couple of times a week. My hair is only wavy when I want it to be straight - otherwise it's stick straight (of course ). It's related a lot to whether I let it natural dry, and how humid it is. This morning it dried naturally, and it's both warm and humid (around 90 F, 34 C and 60% humidity at the moment - supposed to get up to 97F today) .

My hair is also very thick and somewhat fine. (I.e, I have a lot of hair, and it's somewhat fine). I'm not sure how this affects what cuts will work for me, but I'm sure it does

Like Angie, I can see #2 working beautifully with your hair and your face shape. But she's right. You'll need to flat iron it. You could probably get away with only blow drying it a couple of times per week and then each morning just give a quick touch up with the flat iron. That's what I used to do when I had a chin length bob way back when.

I think having thick hair would work with that cut well too.

Also contemplating a color stripe, but not sure I have the guts just yet to go there.

Of the pics I like #2 best, too - based on your face shape, "as is" hair pics, knowing a bit of your style and maintenance efforts.

I'm not sure what the front of #2 is like from the pic - is it long and just side swept or is it shorter bangs that are side swept? I'd be careful of getting too much of a "wedge" in back so I'm thinking somewhere in between #2 and #4.

I like the idea of #2 for you. It will require some maintenance, but less in winter than summer. My hair's like yours -- natural wave comes out in humidity, and with layering. Super thick but fine.

texstyle - I'm not sure what #2 is like from the front either - I just found this pic on a "short hair" website. I think I want sideswept bangs (or straight bangs) - I'm just not sure how long I'd like them.

Wow, your hair looks very similar to mine, in texture and thickness. Just last week I had mine cut into a pixie-ish cut...no styling required! I have a pintrest board with some haircuts that might work for you http://www.pinterest.com/ohsocrafty/hair/ Looking forward to seeing your new look!

Tricia - Thanks! Mine is actually a growing-out pixie (look through my archives - it was last a pixie about a year ago). It was low maintenance but didn't do my face any favors. So I'm trying it out longer

We have very similar hair types. Yes to an inverted bob, but you WILL need to take a little time to style it or it will not look edgy or intentional at all. The good news is that as far as hairstyles go, it's still fairly short and shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes to blowdry and at least iron the pieces in front.

ETA: Be sure your stylist knows what he or she is doing. There is quite a bit of precision involved to make sure the layers hang right and aren't chunky/poofy.

#2 is good Amy. With your wave I would be wary of too much layering particularly if you are wanting low maintenance. With the wave the styles wont look like the photos.

Even my now much more low maintenance style requires blow drying and a quick sweep of the flat iron to iron out any stubborn kinks (I have wavy hair too).

How much time are you prepared to spend on your hair in the morning??

My daughter just looked at this and really wants #2 in the "wavy" set, but I don't think my hair is that curly - I'd have to curl it!

Amy I really like #3 and #4. Just remember that even tho they are wavy, they are still 'styled'. Personally I think it is rare person who can get up in the mornng and go (so to speak). Must of us mere mortals need to spend some time on our hair.

Ahh Deborah - but I'm lazy!

And yes, I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'll have to do more than drag my fingers through my hair if I want it to look like I did more than that.... I think I can handle it - I guess we'll see!

My reaction was the same as your daughters - love #10 but I am no good with hair advice. I am good with hair appreciation though so I hope to see the after soon! (I rely on my haircut to do the styling fwiw.)

I'm with you on the low-maintenance hair, Amy! I consider even blow-drying a huge expenditure in effort. I have found that by following some of the Curly Girl tips (not even sure where I found them online) and experimenting with a few different hair-care products, I can get my hair to look passable. I have fine, wavy hair too.

I think the inverted bob will be great for you (I have one myself). As for the bangs, if you're undecided and your bangs are already long, maybe start with the sideswept ones, because you can always cut them shorter later. I have been growing out my bangs so that I can do the side-sweep thing, and it's taking longer than I thought, argh.
