Hair Suggestions Please! - YouLookFab Forum

After too many years of the same boring, long, layers-growing-out non-hairstyle I've finally decided to take the plunge and get a proper haircut!

I have an appointment on Friday with a guy who has cut my hair before and with whom I felt in very safe hands. However I'm now slightly at a loss as to what to ask him to do with my hair. To give you an idea, it's quite fine though also rather plentiful, and has a natural wave. I wash my hair every day, though only twice a week with shampoo and conditioner. I don't use styling products, and don't even own a hairdryer or tongs/straighteners!

I've had a look at a few styles online. However I don't know if they would suit my lifestyle. I really want something that's low maintenance and practical; I'm also going for a job interview soon so it has to look reasonably professional too. I was thinking about getting some wispy or side-swept bangs cut in. As an aside, I've never been able to work out what shape of face I have either - just a little too short to be oval, so I'm not sure what else to call it?

I loved the look of some of the chin length styles I looked at, but am afraid I wouldn't be brave enough to go for that length after having had long locks for so many years! At the moment I'm thinking around shoulder length or perhaps slightly longer, possibly with some bangs like I mentioned above. Generally I wear my hair tied back or up, so envisage continuing to do that most of the time.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate some help and suggestions from the forum. As you might have guessed from my ramblings, I'm kind of floundering with this, so really any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Just above shoulder length with sideswept bangs would give you the option of wearing it up or down. Think about what kind of tops you wear, I hate when my hair interferes with my collars or vice versa.

you have similar hair to me! though my individual hairs are thick, and my hair is less...ruly :P. I agree with lynne about just above shoulder length being the right length for you. Shorter than that would make it inconvenient to tie up, which you probably would need to do in your profession (doctor, right?)

Firefly, I'm not great with hair suggestions but I'll try. I think you have a very pretty round face, and I think that bangs would look relaly nice on you.

May want to avoid a side bang if you don't blow dry or fuss at all. With natural wave and some curl your bangs will go every which way and not look much like a side bang. But shorter and layered would totally work with your beautiful hair!!

I agree with everyone else that your hair is great. I think shoulder length makes sense, and wouldn't be too dramatic a change for you. I remember watching a guest on Oprah years ago (possibly Jose Eber), who said that once hair is long enough to go past the shoulders, it doesn't much matter to your look if it goes just past the shoulders or if it is several inches longer. He said that visually, the fact that the hair forms a break at the shoulders will make the looks similar. So if you're really worried and don't want too much change, just ask the stylist to let the length go just past your shoulders. I bet it won't seem that different at all.

Taylor makes an excellent point about bangs and upkeep. Having said that, you have such a nice, high forehead, that if you were willing to put in the time with a blow drier or flat iron, I think bangs would be flattering.

And don't forget to post a picture of what you end up with, OK?

I think short (around the shoulders) and layers will give you nice curl with minimal fuss. I'm not a fan of bangs if you aren't going to straighten them everyday.

Lynne, that's a good point about the length and the potential for interfering with collars etc. I've had long hair since I was about ten though, so I think it might be a case of trial and error, at least for a while. And I will definitely post pictures!

C1, that's a great word - ruly You're right, I am a doctor, so tying it out of the way would be a must since I'm not planning to go super short.

Medusa, thanks for the face shape validation. I'm pretty good at looking at other people, but seem to have a blind spot when it comes to myself. It's given me a great starting point at searching for photos.

Rute, Scarlet, Taylor and Steph, thank you for the lovely compliments! I get really self-conscious about taking my own photo so end up looking quite solemn. But thank you!

Taylor, Steph and Lisa, those are good points about having bangs. I'd been wondering about them as a way of making a change, but the upkeep side of things would put me off. I just know I wouldn't bother putting in the time and effort to keep them looking nice!

Anyway, I've been looking at more photos online, and the responses here are helping me refine my ideas.

I think that the style of Lauren Santo Domingo would work really well on you. I think her hair is similar to yours in thickness and waviness. It's a very pretty style and I can see it on you for sure!

I'm not sure why you had to log in to picasa, Medusa. I logged out of ylf and clicked on the links with no problem. Has anyone else noticed the same thing?

Oh, good for you to embrace a big change like that! I think it looks fabulous! It will be so much faster to wash. Were you nervous while sitting in the salon chair? Do your family & friends like it?
