Hair Help? - Tame the Bush!

Sorry about the blurry pics, but I am really struggling with what to do with my hair.

I have tried Pinterest but their "simple things" have a million power tools and products - I am really the get up and run kind of a person.

I am not adverse to getting it cut, either.

I think it is a huge poofy mess when I just brush it out; and not a good match for my usual style.

I think I am going to invest in a few hair things, and would love your suggestion and guidance.

Well, given that I have my own unsolvable hair issues, I'm probably not the right person to answer this. But I'll give it a shot anyway. In pic #1, do you see the strand of hair between the phone and your cheekbone? It poofs out a bit and then curves back toward your chin. I think it frames your face very well. It may take more work than you'd like, but I think a just-under-chin length cut styled to curves under would be great on you.

My hair is about the same length as yours, and lately I've been all about the head band as a way to keep it back and out of the way. Sometimes I'll wear it loose, like yours in the picture with a head band in a color that coordinates with my outfit. And most other times, I clip it up with one of those claw thingies and I still add the headband. At first I thought it would be impossible to wear head bands without looking like a wanna be teeny bopper, but I found some nice grown up looking ones at Target I think.

Not sure if this is your thing but how about some long side-swept bangs and just a little shorter length. You could still pull it back in a head band or pony tail.

I think you need to find a good hairdresser. I am super low maintenance when it comes to my hair. I put a little product in and do a half-baked sorta blow dry. Having a good haircut makes a legion of difference.
My Asian friends do better when they find a stylist that understands Asian hair.

I've decided to buy a hair tool - one of those sucking curlers. We'll see if I end up with a bald spot or curls.

Is it kind of nuts to not want to cut my hair in case I get married in the next two years? Most bridal hair styles look really pretty with long hair; and I don't want to limit myself because I decided to chop chop it now?

That sounds kinda nuts when I say it to myself.

No it's not nuts.Lyn why not layer your hair and cut some bangs.
Asian hair looks real good with such a look is what I see.
So many of my Indian friends with straightish hair(read not curly) do that.

I found Morrocan oil cut down a lot of the poofy frizz in my hair. It is not cheap, but it also makes for a faster blow dry, and my hair is keeping good condition for longer.

I was just about to say the very same thing as Lucy. The last time I went to the hairdressers for some lowlights I asked about shampoos and conditioners and she said they had an offer on for both a shampoo and conditioner with Moroccan Oil , so I bought them. Neither products have sulphates or parabens and they really protect hair and colour. I have had absolutely no static since using them and my hair shines beautifully. I can highly recommend it. Moroccan oil is pricey but I think worth it.

Uh, as the owner of Yeti hair, I do not see the big poufy mess you speak of. But I do agree with Anna. Everyone has hair challenges of some kind, and a hairstylist who gets your hair type is really the best resource to get what you want.

I do prefer your hair down, like I know Angie always nudges you to do. I can see a great cut pushing your look into a more sophisticated direction.

Not crazy at all. Also it is probably very practical to have long hair for your work isn't it? That way you can easily tie it back.
Perhaps some side swept bangs? Some small layers?
Also the Oil can really help with taming the hair and adding a bit of shine.

Hi *lyn - by all means try a new tool, but I think a trim is worth exploring. A good stylist can give you some shape without losing too much length (not silly!), and provide some advice about styling/products. I found my stylist by asking a coworker with similarly textured hair where she got hers done.

Anna makes a lot of sense. You need to find a great stylist who understands and will work with your needs.

A lot of hairstyles are lovely, but they require a lot more work than many of us have time for.

I know my stylist and I have been working together for years, and she gets "I have 5 minutes in the morning, and oh, I am allergic to 99% of the products on the market". She works with this, and she always makes sure to leave it long enough for ponytail days - you know, those days at work so stressful that hair simply cannot get in your way.

I strongly agree with Anna and others. A good hairdresser can make all the difference. It seems to me that you have good hair but need just a bit more style. The right hairdresser can give you a cut that works with your hair texture and your facial and overall body shape, and can also recommend the products that are just right for you.

Sometimes you have to try several different hairdressers to find the right one.

I am not a pro, but I've been playing with some natural management ideas for my wavy-to-frizzy hair. The last time I cut my hair, the stylist commented on the shininess and health of my hair. I tend towards wavy, dry hair but started to use a boar bristle brush before bedtime to spread the natural oils throughout the shaft. The one I bought is a Denman boar brush with nylon bristles. The Mason Pearson is supposedly wonderful, but very expensive. The Denman is a great sub.

In the morning, I rinse my hair, condition (olive oil drops, in my case), detangle with a rake comb, pat dry with a microfiber towel.

A while ago, I dropped shampooing to once a week and recently added an apple cider vinegar rinse after shampooing to rebalance the pH. The ACV conditions my hair very well, adding lots of shine, manageability, and makes the hair easy to detangle.

My husband started to use a boar bristle brush at night as well and his hair is easier to manage and is shinier. He has short, straight hair prone to oiliness vs. my longer, wavier, prone-to-dryness hair.

Off to a hair appointment today! This lady comes with some recommendations (she does a consultation day before she actually cuts your hair - haha), but we'll have to see - most of my Asian friends get their hair cut in another city (about 2 hrs away) where they have a larger Asian population. I'm not about to drive 2 hrs for a haircut!

I have tried oils in my hair - I like Argan oil for my hair; and I use shampoo with it in it. Bonus: boy thinks it smells nice. Tee hee.

@ IK - it's okay, I'm asian, I'm forever stuck at Tanner 2 or 3 (developmental stage of like a 13 year old).
