Hair frumpiness - growing out a short cut

I have decided to grow out my short (maybe pixie even) hair cut and am now in the in between stage. I had it cut last week, but am feeling a bit dowdy and would love some styling suggestions.

My camera seems to have died, but I have one picture someone else took of me holding their baby (I'll cut the baby out for privacy reasons)

ETA: I am looking for suggestions to style it right now

I went through the same thing last year when going from a short pixie cut to past the shoulder length. I find it easiest to have layers and use a flat iron to flip up the ends as it grows. This style works for the entire growing time.

Here are a few of Reese Witherspoon with the type of style I mean and one of me while mine was growing out. Super easy to style with a flat iron. Just run the iron through the layers and use the wrist to flip it out at the ends.

This might be an opportunity to ask what being "a mare" means in this context Angie. I have noticed you using it quite a bit recently

Anyway I am growing it out because my husband prefers me in longer hairstyles. Not that he is telling me what to do or anything (he says he's happy if I am happy) but, after a year or so with short hair, I am ready for a change and it would be nice to make one to something he likes better.

My suggestion is the same as Dianthus's. This is more or less what I did. I think it is what Teri has done, too; you might want to check her older threads for pics.

For the next few months, will your hair wave at all on its own at the back? Mine did, and I quickly had a sort of shaggy layered look. tt was the easiest grow-out I'd ever had.

You look great in short hair, Anne, but I understand the need to grow it once in a while and i'm sure you will look lovely with longer locks.

I did the layers and flipping trick described above as I was easing myself into my current short cut - it really does work for those funny in-between lengths.

Hi - I am back again. I tried flicking up some ends with my curling tongs and wasn't too impressed by the look. I did it on washed dry hair with some shine revitalizer added. The ends kind of look fried so I think I am missing something here! Any more tips?

Anne, from the photo I think MAYBE your hair is still a bit short for the flipping trick. You will probably need to wait a bit. And some of this depends on your hair's natural texture.

I don't think Teri posted pics solely about her hair, but I might be wrong; maybe if you PM her she can help find a thread? I had just noticed by looking at her earlier and later photos.

Here are a few shots of my hair in various growing out stages.....Note - I didn't actually use a straightener (or any styling tool) when my hair was this length. It just went that way. As it got longer, I had to blow dry and at the salon she would straighten and flip (when I got trims). It would have looked nicer if I had done that, but I could never be bothered.

Anne, while you are growing out your cut I'd encourage you to keep getting it trimmed and styled regularly. Don't expect one short cut to look good all the way through the growth stages without some changes. I loved your hair at its pixie stage, and it looks very cute now - kind of reminds me of Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail. I love the piecey-ness of your bangs!
Think about growing out the parts of your hair that you'd like to be at the same length - you don't want to end up looking like you have a mullet, so as your hair grows you'll want your stylist to bring the back of your hair, especially the hair around the nape of your neck, shorter as you are trying to attain more length in the front parts of your hair. Don't freak out about how much hair is being cut when you go in for a trim - focus on *where* the hair is being cut.

A good flatiron, some styling cream and hairspray are your friends! Also, lots of fix-up in-between cuts.

FWIW I think your hair looks cute now....but have fun growing it out. It doesn't have to be painful.

I do want to enjoy the process. I don't want to just grow it out and not like how it look in the process.

I have been looking at some of Teri's pictures - she is so well groomed I feel like she is a long way ahead.

Kari - I loved Meg Ryan's hair in You Have Mail! She had some pretty cool highlights at that point too. I have just done my roots myself (since above picture) and because I chose to use medium rather than light blonde, it now looks all ashy and lifeless.

The stylist did cut my hair at the nape, (and used practically the same words as you) but I am wondering if for my next haircut I should ask for the back hair to be shorter so the style might be more like an angled bob - which probably goes against most of the haircut suggestions above.

Suz - my hair is straight, with only enougt wave to kick up at the back of my neck. Thanks for hunting up the pics -mine is fairly close to your first pics

When it was short, I styled it very quickly - washed it, combed it and then scrunched wax in it and let it airdry.
Now it seems to go flat even when I do that - do you guys have product suggestions?

As others have said, I'm in the process of growing mine out too. It's been almost ayear and it's getting easier.

#1 this was last October 2010

#2 January 2011
Blow dry and flat iron flipping ends out.

#3 March 2011 - Getting longer and now using curling iron

#4 April 2011 - Growing bangs out too - more curling

#5 August 2011

#6 September 2011 - straight (blow dry only)
#7 September 2011 - curled

I'd say that I could never do my hair without my REVO styler. I've been using it for over 8 years. It's a spinning brush.

Anne, the wax is likely too heavy for your hair at this point in its growth. I find that I need lighter styling products as my hair gets longer or it weighs the hair down, making it seem lank. So a lighter mousse or cream might work better to keep things in place.

Teri looks like a hairstyling pro! Amazing what she can do!

It took me two years to go from a pixie to (barely) shoulder length hair. I think the angled bob idea is great. Every time I went in for a trim, I asked to be de-mulleted, or in other words to have the front trimmed and the back cut more, so it looked more like a style and less like an attempt to grow out a cut. I also used lots of mousse and velcro rollers to keep it from sticking flat to my head (ugh, fine hair). And when it got long enough, I used a flat iron to curl it just for a change of pace. Hang in there!
