Hair clips that actually stay put?

My hair is at that crazy growing-out length where I can't get it all into a pony and need clips. But I cannot find clips (the flat kind) that stay! They all slide out and it's super embarrassing to shed clips as you go. Anyone else with thick hair have this problem and did you ever find miracle clips that stay put?

I've got the kind that are metal and you bend them to put them in - similar to these I think:

I've got them in a bigger size, and I use multiple ones per side - if you put too much hair in them they'll just slide right out.

Then there are the regular barrettes with the separate clip, some made for thick hair, but those aren't as unobtrusive.

Regular bobby pins, forget about it - they're useless for my hair.

To keep it out of your face, try stretchy headbands. For decoration, I like Flexi-8s. They do slide, but less severely than other types I've tried.

I'm also a big fan of octopus clips for my very heavy, thick, slick/straight hair.

I've still have some Flexi-8s around somewhere, but they never worked that well in my hair. Something similar to these ones usually worked pretty well, because they're not open at one end like bobby pins.

I went through this (and then cropped my hair super short when it got hot). Best clips I have ever, ever had -- these Vidal Sassoon ones that have a kind of comb arrangement on the back. I found them at my local supermarket in both large and small sizes. The large ones could hold my entire fringe back, which is no mean feat given how much hair I have. Highly recommended!

I don't wear clips any more these days, but back when I did the only ones that would stay in my thick, straight, heavy hair were the metal ones like Laura linked to. The plain metal ones (not the ones coated with plastic or fabric) were the best, and you want ones that are on the larger side for optimal clamping power. I used to paint them with nailpolish to get different colors.

I also think the bendy back contour clips stay the best, in my limited hair clip experience.

K, I'm not going to put hair spray on my hair, too many aerosols etc. Also usually I'm putting it back to work out, and hair spray to work out seems kindof silly. I'm not sure why, actually, but it does.

It's not silly at all IK. I've had problems with some aerosols as well. It's been a while since I've done my pins like that, but I would first spray them on a paper or cloth towel and then put the pin in my hair.
