Hair advice--results

I have to give a big thank you to everyone that gave their curly hair input. I think I am getting close and thought I'd share today's results so you know your wisdom is helping:

Today my dad is going through old videos and converting them to DVDs and I saw my hair when I was 7: bone straight and waist length. Amazing!

I combed before washing my hair, washed with conditioner only, and scrunched with my head upside down and a pile of mousse. I used too much product in the front and not enough in the back though, so the front is a bit too crunchy and the back is kind of frizzy (you can't see it there obviously). Oh well, at least I'm on to something.

I do Angie. It's different and I like a change of pace. It's also a LOT less maintenance. Everyone IRL seems to prefer it wavy so I'll probably keep it this way for a while. A few months ago I was trying to wave it with a flat iron, if you recall. How silly of me.

I need to find a stylist that's good with curly hair now though. I wonder if I should go to Devachan (where Ele got her fabulous haircut a few years ago). I don't know if they only work with super curly hair though. I'm kind of talking to myself now, aren't I? :p

Looks good! I also had straight, and very fine, hair when I was a child. My hair turned curly when I went through puberty! That was a shock. =o)

It took me 26 years Kimana! Not sure what happened...

BTW, does anyone with much thicker, curlier hair than mine want my tube of Redken crystal curls? It's MUCH too heavy and thick for my fine hair. It's definitely for coarse, unruly hair types and I imagine it would work well, but just not on me.

I have only used a pea sized amount once or twice, so it's basically still full. PM me if you're interested. I paid $20 (the fact that it's on Amazon for $10 makes me mad), but won't charge anything since it's just going to get thrown out if I don't find another taker.

I always wanted to have wavy or curly hair. I had some curls when I was a child but as soon as I entered school my hair became straight as a poker - here is the benefit of education for you

My hair is a lot like yours naturally, except mine is LOT more unruly and shapeless. I have ultra lame waves, so I just straighten my hair, or hide it in a pony tail. Glad you found something that works for you! I have given up finding a solution.

I thought your hair looked pretty when we met Marianne. Yours seems much fuller than mine which definitely helps. I was secretly envying it!

Marianna, sometimes it's easier just to straighten than it is to try and get the perfect curl/wave. In my case that ended up not being true. Mine never looked as sleek and perfect as yours when it was straight.

I am very excited about this. My parents hate it but too bad.

I like the curls. I think it's nice to change things up like you mentioned - especially if it's easy and less damaging. I really like the straight hair too though.

I think part of the problem is that I am just out and outdoors a lot more than before (though still not that much). The elements are not kind to my straight hair. I'm just happy to have options. If I want straight hair it's easy to get. If I want waves it's easy too. I feel lucky to have both styles within reach.

Maya - I'll take the Redken! I can get it from you when I see you in NY, if that's okay.

I've always thought about going to DevaChan when I'm NY, since they have that salon right near my dad's place, but I just lucked out and found a woman here in LA who seems to know exactly how to cut my hair.

It looks good, Maya! I think the right cut would help improve the shape of it while curly. And, as you mentioned, you can always pull out your blow dryer and straighten it if you feel like it! Your hair seems to be similar in texture to mine. As a child I had barely wavy, very long dark blond hair. In my late 20s it went very dark, I started to get (even more) silver hairs, and become much easier to curl. So I think it is normal for our hair to change as we go through life!

Yes, being able to have a curly or straight option is fun.

Since you are only washing with a conditioner, are you using the special kind that have no sulfates? I remember S., from Academichic first starting out with the no shampoo routine and she just used regular drugstore conditioner and after a few weeks, she said her hair started to smell terrible. So then she started to buy the more expensive but correct conditioner. I tried to find her posts on it, but I couldn't.

Oh, I like this. I love that you have curls without the frizz which is a big achievement, particularly given summer humidity issues that I've read you've had to battle with in recent times.

I love the waves Maya! This is what I would love to have my hair look like if I let it dry naturally, but it just isn't wavy enough. You look great!
