I’m wondering if I should do something different with my hair. After baby, my hairdresser suggested the perm (for easy maintenance) which I’ve had for the past two years.

Pros:
I (still) get compliments on this style. Flatters my face shape too.
I only need a re-perm every 5 months (with one maintenance cut in between as it grows out nicely).
Easy day to day maintenance: wash and go.

Negs:
Bad for hair, so I’m unwilling to combine with coloring.
Long (3-4 hours) and painful procedure.
They don’t always cut it well with the curls, resulting in blah hair after all.
Air drying gives the best look, but in winter that’s no option.

Below’s a picture of what I’d go for. And one of me years ago with a similar cut. It will only be straight of course after I grow out my perm.

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions? What's current??

Dark hair can look flat without some other colors running through it.

I think you would look lovely with a cut similar to the first picture or this more messy bob like picture #2, which would handle the end of your grow out of perm easier than a straight style.

I like your hair in it’s natural (straight) form and colour (dark/brown - works with your light skin and rosy blush. I REALLY like Bijou’s first inspo pic and think you could carry it off.

I would also vote for keeping your natural straight hair texture, and I like the idea of a chin-length bob with bangs for you!

I have fought my natural curly/wavy hair texture, on and off, for most of my life, so I understand, but I really do like how your hair looks straight.

if youwent natural i e no perm ,you could get some colour run through to give interest.l agree that the darker hair suits you so how about some lowlights rather than high lights?

I like the idea of a straight bob on you, perhaps with some stacking for volume and a bit of color added to your own...ooh la la!

I like your hair straight and darker. I prefer the long bob. Bangs are a commitment and need trimming regularly. I trim mine every 2 weeks.

I say try staight and your natural color. You can always change the color later.

I would love your nice straight hair! I straightened mine for years before I gave in to the curls. I like the long bob you posted and also Bijou's second pic.

Indo love the straight bob-I wear it myself! Highlights or just a few balayage areas help break up the dark hair. It definitely is easier to go with your natural hair texture. That being said, I find that bangs are hard to wear with my glasses, and keep getting pushed sideways. I used to wear them when I wore contacts, but now it is better to keep the hair longer

A friend of mine has visited style masterclass ones where professional gave participants a basic understanding of the personal style... What I'm leading to is that there was said that the original color of a person's hair is usually the best color for them and all that hair highlighting are just attempts to imitate the natural. And if you want to dye, then better to pick the color that is close or relates to your natural and that gonna be perfect changing. The same thing is with the straight/curly question. The closer to the original -- the lesser possibility to mess your appearance. Though, that's not the rule, that's the recommendation for daily use. For the parties or any possible occasion, you may change yourself in any possible way starting from color-changing (what do you think about this stuff?) and finishing with straightening or curling your hair (for most naughty hair, these, for example)
I'm sure, if you want it, then it's better to aim for it, bring to life at least once to taste the feeling.

Another vote to give the straight lob a go - I think it's a classic style (*ahem* full disclosure that is my hairstyle of choice!) - very versatile, easy to style and maintain, etc.

I like the straight lob in the lighter color. If you get really fine highlights mixed with lowlights it grows out more naturally and the dimension is pretty without a ton of maintenence. I also have straight fine hair and have found that adding highlights provides some volume so it doesn't lay as flat against the scalp. I only use minimal lightweight products like fine mist hairspray or a dry shampoo for volume. I love the look of bangs and have them off and on but they are definitely a commitment to have trimmed every few weeks. Since my hair is so fine they can end up looking oily fast if they lay against my forehead or if I touch them. It's a fast but dramatic way to change your look so if you want to ease into it you could do the straight lob first, decide if you want to add color second and then third add bangs if you need even more of a change. Doing all three at once would be pretty dramatic but maybe that's more your comfort zone than mine.

Also wanted to add, I adore the look of Bijou's photo #2 and have tried to achieve that look in the past. My stylist kindly informed me that my own fine hair would not end up looking that way because: 1) I don't have enough hair, 2) It is not that same texture, 3) The model may have hair extensions in to add that much volume.
I'm sharing bluntly because I had a disappointing experience where a different stylist layered my hair in choppy layers, and with stick straight fine hair it ended up looking stringy and thin (rather than fuller) and you could see every single chop unless I curled it.

Fwiw: here's my 'new' haircut after all your great feedback. I didn't share immediately because I thought the result of the trim & ashy brown color shampoo was quite underwhelming, not like, say, Anchie's new haircut. But it's *my* hair at least and I think I'm getting to like it again. Perhaps come summer I'll add subtle highlights for some more depth.

I like idea of highlights or lowlights instead of perm - your new color looks nice, natural and soft. It probably will get slightly lighter over time ( after couple of weeks ) - mine always looks the best after some of the color is washed out, more natural.

Folks are a bit confused on highlights and lowlights .

Lowlights are at least 2 shades darker than your natural color, therefore lowlights aren’t practical for dark/very dark hair
