I got a lovely compliment today

The teacher in the classroom next door but one to mine said today what a lovely tiny waist I have and how I always dress to show it off, she thought I was wearing a corset!!!!!! I did thank her but fell into the age old trap of then going on to point out the bad bits for which I got a firm telling off from shopping friend who works in the classroom next door!!!!
Do you all take a compliment graciously or point out your bad bits too? x

Oh, that's a hard habit to break! Taking a compliment graciously is the best approach, but I do the same as you. I explain how I got it for a steal or some other silly thing. I'm trying to stick with a polite and succint 'thank you' these days.

I just say "Well, thank you very much, you made my day" and might offer to tell them where I got the item they are admiring. Otherwise I move on with my day.

Weird, isn't it? It seems we are apologizing for looking good... I know, I was guilty of this too!
Now I am learning just to say thank you and acknowledge the compliment - actually it is much easier as you need to say less and do not need to come up with excuses!:-)

I haven't managed yet to accept a compliment, or a gift, without making a total mess out of it.
Do you think there is a place where we can take lessons?

I have started stopping myself from doing that (just recently!) and now just say" Thank You!" It's not easy.
I had a very nice compliment today, too. As I was wondering around the parking lot at the grocery store trying to find my car an older gentlemen exclaimed that I had "Great style!" from his wheelchair.

How nice, Louise! I, too, struggle with a simple "thank you" and letting the compliment stand without making a self-depreciating comment. Need to work on that!

Nice compliment, Louise. I have to laugh because we often kidded my Mom about that. Someone would say "delicious coffee, Doreen" and Mom would say "oh, it's only Sanka." So today, I try to say "thank you" and leave it at that. I don't always succeed!

P.S. You do have a lovely, tiny waist.

I love getting those kinds of compliments! I'm pretty good at receiving them - I always remind myself to take a deep breath to really "take in" the compliment - and then I just respond with a big smile and a heartfelt "Thank you!"

I think it's great to work on just saying 'thank you' back - it gives the person who made the compliment such pleasure!

I had to train myself to take a compliment. My first reaction is to rip myself apart, regardless of what is being complimented (my looks, a meal I made, artwork, my dogs...) but I am -finally- getting good at saying "Thank you", "I'm so glad you enjoy[ed] it" or "We think he's great too."

I have actually caught myself about to do it and literally shut my mouth. It feels nice to just accept compliments and you are more likely to receive another in the future!

Oh, I wanted to add something here because it seems fitting. At the end of our workshop on Sunday one of the students commented on how great my biz partner and I are with people. I laughed out loud. Fifteen years ago I NEVER would have received such a remark and even now I am constantly worried about alienating people (there's a reason I work with animals).

With a big smile I told him that is probably the first time I've heard that and that I would write it down in my diary. Since we'd been getting to know each other a little during the 4 days he appreciated my joke. He reiterated that he meant it sincerely. I probably just should have thanked him the first time but... It's hard sometimes!

How nice to have received such a flattering compliment. I'm the same way Louise, have never been very good about accepting compliments-why that is I'm not sure. But when you think about it, it does minimize the effort someone took to notice something favorable. Maybe if we look at it like that the next time "Thank you" will come easier.

Firstly Ms Louise, she said it because it is absolutely TRUE!! You have the most amazing waist.

I find it hard to accept compliments too but have been practising just saying "Thank you!" and then taking a deep breath and stopping at that point. It's funny how unnatural it feels, but afterwards I feel so good for not putting myself down. Must say it has only been since I've been in my 30's though!

Yes, I do know what you mean. I try to say a very warm "thank you" and then just shut my trap, but it's hard.

What a nice (and truthful) comment to hear from a colleague!

I'm not the most gracious accepter of compliments, either, and tend to be self-deprecating. I've tried to make a conscious effort to just say "Thank you!" and stop there, but it's a difficult habit to break.

I find it pretty easy to just say "Thank you" because I can never think of what to say anyway I do tend to put myself down with peers though when I have accomplished something they haven't, which is the same dirty trap.

It is hard not to do that isn't it.

If people tend to go on a bit about ..oh your so lucky Blah, blah. I do tend to say Thank You, but i do have other stuff that is not so great.

I wish I didn't do that , but i think most people are clearly uncomfortable soaking up the love openly and unashamed!
