I've been shaping my wardrobe by whittling little pieces of it away, rather than by adding more on, recently.

Today is three days out from the deadline for some things I bought in July. The ways cotton is produced can waste a lot of water, so I wanted to try rayon. The shorts are definitely going back, but I can't decide on this top. It looks great on, could go with my bright blue skirt, jeans, or (my favorite) bright white. But I don't know if I'd ever get used to the fabric enough to really wear it, even though it is very flattering.

I could absolutely see you in this top, and it seems great for your climate. What is it about the fabric that bothers you?

I am on the fence about rayon. Generally, I won’t buy the fast fashion version because it doesn’t hold up to washing—and who wants to dry clean a $15 top?—but nicer rayons could have a place in my closet if the quality is good and care is easy.

Not sure that I understand what you said about your deadline. Is it so that you are allowed to return clothes you bought three months ago?!?

The top is lovely and flattering and fits in with pieces that you have. If you hand wash it and tug it into shape as it dries on a hanger, it should not need to be ironed. I like rayon shorts as cool in hot weather.

Yes, Cat, in the US many retailers offer a 90-day return window.

If I'd had a sleeveless blouse all summer and the tags were still on, that would be a sign to me that I didn't want / need it enough, and I'd return it.

I like the title of your post, I must use some attrition on my purchases, too!
Maybe try it on just to see, but when I am close to the return by date and have not worn the item that is an indication that it is better to return. YMMV.

As far as rayon and the environment, LaPed provided excellent links in a recent viscose thread of Sterling's. Rayon/viscose CAN be better than cotton depending on quality/where from etc. As far as how it feels, it can also feel great, also depends! I just love my 100% viscose top, cool, wears like iron. But my husband dislikes the feel of it, not soft enough for him, says it feels like canvas. Aesthetic wise, I think this top would suit you so well! Why can't you get used to it, do you think?

It's a nice looking top but my experience is that if I don't like the feel of something on my skin, I tend not to reach for it. Especially in sticky warm weather (it looks like a warm weather top). As Jenn said, I don't think all rayons are created equal.

Now you all have me thinking I should go see if it's on the clearance rack. It looks as good on as many of you said. The main reasons I haven't worn it are the fabric and that it is for the life I'm moving into, not the one I've had. I reached for it the other day, but then chose something with no tags. It is "nicer" rayon. I could probably get used to the feel of it on my skin, as long as it doesn't make me feel clammy. Does rayon "breath" when you wear it?

If you're thinking you have to get used to how it feels on, it's not for you. Whatever bothers you now will bother you more over time, not less. Pretty as it is, you'll never wear it. I say send it back.

Liz, thanks for answering. Interesting. And sounds a little strange to me, who are used to a return window of around one week. I can't help thinking that retailers with a 90 days return window make things difficult for themselves ... Also, I basicly find it a bit hard to understand why anyone would keep an item for three months without removing the tags. (Removing the tags are among the first things I do when I have bought a new item and made sure it fits.)

However, I somehow understand you, fashiontern, as you explain that you bought it for the life you are moving into, and as you actually do have a 90 days return window.

Very nice top! I like the print, the colours, the empire line and the broad shoulders. Besides, in my ears, "rayon" sounds great. I have good experiences with rayon. It feels good, drapes well, and yes, it "breaths." If I looked good in V-necks, I would love to wear this top. Many other women look gorgeous in V-necks, and perhaps you are one of them.

I think it is a really pretty top, and I think the colour and shape will suit you.

I wear rayon sometimes but our climate is very moderate. For me this would be a work top.

I have a blouse that kind of reminds me of this - I bought it on sale right at the end of summer and did not wear it for six months ( two years ago). I actually really like pulling it out now for work, I have decided I really only like it with black pants without a jacket, but for a simple work look I feel good in it. I wear it in summer every second week.

Aside - our return windows here is usually two weeks from receiving the item...within two weeks the larger retailers offer a refund unless it is final sale.

The blouse has been returned. Better to focus on wearing things I love.
