Grooming trends? (Hair and makeup)

Last winter I got 3 inches chopped off the length of my hair and straightened it using the Revlon airbrush during the cold weather months. I loved the length. It was easy to maintain, and really worked with all my hats (signature in winter). In summer I wear it natural/curly, and let it get a little longer. A couple of weeks ago, I got it shortened up again. We still have summer temps, so I’m letting it air dry - but it’s looking better at this length, curly, than the slightly longer length I let it get to. However, I’m looking forward to styling it straight once humidity levels go down.

I’m seeing ‘micro bobs’ on the runway, in magazines, and on models in product pages. I feel this is a ‘beauty’ trend I’ve adopted. Otherwise, I’m not sure. I’m lagging in make-up. Have had some issues with my hands/fingers - so no mani’s recently. Not sure about brow trends (shapes and colours). Also, other hair trends, like ornaments? My favourite bar barrettes seem to have been discontinued (can’t replace broken ones), same with the style of hair clip that I liked.

Are you aware of anything ‘new’ worth trying in hair and make-up styling or grooming? Are you experimenting or adopting anything ‘new’? Tweaking anything that is signature with a subtle update?

Nope. Afraid I’m boring with this stuff. Hair always the same, don’t groom brows, minimal makeup. I do like toenail polish occasionally once it is sandal weather (not yet for us) and I do that myself.

I’m more into maintenance myself, so not really interested in trends. My hair cut into a short bob, I’ve been keeping it like this for the last few years. I keep makeup minimal - a bit of shimmer on eyelids, a bit of blush, tinted lip balm, mascara. Eyebrow trend is more natural, full eyebrows and I like much more than well defined brows, but I think it’s important to keep it neatly shaped.

I always wondered about hair trends - how could anyone go from short to long so quickly? Anyway, I don't really follow beauty trends and am not very experimental with my makeup. Like Irina, I am more focused on maintenance (like skincare) than makeup. But would be interested to know what is going on out there.

I did a big chop a few months ago (up to my ears) and I loved how easy it was to wash and go. I was shocked at the responses at work too, because apparently bobs are "in" right now. I had no idea.

I've been letting my hair grow out since then because DH prefers it longer, and now it's around the top of my shoulders. It's got a lot more frizz now, even with frizz products, but that's partly summer/fall humidity to blame. I doubt frizzy hair is in style, although I always read about "let your hair go natural." Well my natural is a frizzy lion's mane.

I know a lot of people like microbladed brows, ombre brows, lip fillers, and botox, but I'm not into anything that's going to require needles.

For make-up, I'm not really sure the trends right now, I confess, I'm pretty lazy about make-up. The only time I wear it is if I am going into the office or meeting with a client. The latest make-up trend I include when I do wear make-up is a sheer, tinted foundation instead of a thicker matte version.

From time to time I try new products, although I don't wear makeup that often these days. Seems like thick, heavy, dark lashes are still in style. I have skinny, sparse, thin eyelashes and the thickening, volumizing mascaras are a disaster on me. I keep trying, wishing I could find an old time Maybelline mascara box that didn't try to do anything other than darken the lashes.

As I get older, I find less is enough, despite any trends.

I make small changes to my hair, makeup, and skincare.

I recently bought a new airbrush from Shoppers—Dr. Knotts. I love it. I have probably tried every airbrush on the market except for the Dyson. The only other one I liked was BabyBliss. I haven't changed my style.

I get my eyebrows and lashes tinted as needed. I remember that Maybelline Mascara box that Ms. Maven mentioned. I haven't seen it in years, but I loved it. I currently use Lancome Hypnose.

I love the idea of Burgundy nail polish. So beautiful for Fall.

Oh, the mico-bobs look cute! I had no idea. I just had my hair cut and coloured so now it is just touching the top of my shoulders, which is still long enough for a ponytail. I've also been transitioning lighter and with more red, like a dark auburn (I'm about halfway through the transition).

Three days ago, I bought burgundy nail polish for a pedi and then as the weather cools, for a mani: OPI "I'm not really a Waitress" a colour that has been around for many years (and, as I just learned, is also the title of a book about how Suzi Weiss-Fischmann founded OPI). I might have to read it!

I am changing my hair a bit. Ever since my big change at 52, my hair has become very curly so I'm trying to embrace this new look.

I'm also taking care of my skin more so than I used to to with moisturizers with SPF, and washing my face every night. I still don a red-ish lipstick but now it's a bit more muted. I'm into the more berry colors this year anyway.

I don’t change my makeup or grooming with trends. I adjust here and there mostly based on my aging skin. I’ve added some products over the years (brow pencil, a light concealer) while mostly abandoning others (I only use eyeshadow for special occasions when getting really dressed up).

I will note the trends when it comes to hair styles but usually am not hugely affected by them. I am more concerned with my hairstyle reflecting my personal style than being trendy. I’ve had the shag cut I’m currently wearing for a few years now, after sporting the asymmetric cut for a few years pre-pandemic. I feel like I could use a change, but I don’t know what. I don’t particularly enjoy having shorter hair — it grows fast and needs constant maintenance, plus I don’t really love how short hair makes me look or feel. I look awful in a bob — I didnt even like it when I had one in my 20s and it was would be too much emphasis on my saggy neck and jawline now. So…I’m kinda letting the overall length grow right now, and maybe longer layers? I dunno. Thinking of a little longer version of what I have now — like the wolf cut (example pics below). I like that a longer length means I can pull it off my neck in a ponytail for workouts too.

Burgundy nail polish sounds perfect! Maybe I’ll treat myself to a rare manicure when I get home from my Yellowstone trip.

Makeup trends no longer really interest me ; occasionally my daughter will tell me about some thing or another that is all over TikTok but unless it's a product performance tip , I don't care. Because I still go to work everyday and am often standing under glaring unnatural light, I prefer a polished, neutral makeup look . Anything less looks too casual and blah for me - at work. I think if I were retired/not working in a public facing role, I wouldn't wear much more than mascara and lipgloss. I do like the newer independent lines like Merit and Westman Atelier which provide a more "curated" line of makeup that works for mature skin and professional work settings. I'm really focused on skin and hair care now more than ever. I'm spending more money on those products than on makeup itself. If I had longer hair, I'd be more interested in hair trends- for example I LOVE a micro french bob, or a loose curly short bob with bangs, but with short fine thinning hair , trends aren't relevant. Again, it's all about caring for the infrastructure ,which one could argue IS a trend . And yes to wine /burgundy nails and a matching sheer wine coloured lip.

Re Hair Trends: We are living in the era of LONG hair. Lots of hair extentions. And styling it all sorts of interesting and complex ways - especially Gen Z. Plaiting is big. Or bobs at the moment. All sorts of bobs.

Personally, I will grow my hair until it looks nice in a ponytail and leave it at that. I'm enjoying the change! Most of all, my natural hair colour.

As for make-up, personally, I am disinterested in make-up (and beauty) trends! I do what I've been doing since I was a young adult, and leave it at that. Occasionally I switch out to a new product. I am never tempted by new beauty and make-up products. I guess I'm not their target customer!

Like Irina, I maintain my simple routine daily. Like LJP, I like the polish of a defined face (and skin), and am disciplined about it. Five years ago I stopped using tinted moisturizer, I am au naturel with my skin. I do my eyes and lips! I groom my own brows. I don't wear nail polish. Just clear. And not all the time.

I am quite simple with hair and makeup. I like a bob on me and play around with this type of cut a bit. Bobs are trending but there is still a lot of long hair here.

Makeup I am also boring although I am wearing more blush than I used to - embracing a more peachy look. I have two shades of lipstick that I wear most days and rarely I wear red.

I have a good but basic skin care regime. My continual struggle is for the perfect light natural foundation. Getting the colour and texture right is something I am picky about.

I'm not really a makeup person at all, but I do feel like there are some macro trends shifting right now: away from dewy finishes and back toward matte; away from "MLBB" lip colours and back toward deeper shades; heavier eye makeup, especially a resurgence of smudgy/smokey looks and a sort of "undone" vibe. And more and more people going short with their hair after a period that's been extremely long-dominant. I think pretty much all of this tracks with the interest in all things 90s, and with the general eschewal of neutral/minimal everything.

I have gotten simpler as time goes on. My hair is medium-long which I find the easiest length to maintain. I cover my grays but nothing crazy colour wise. Make up in natural colours. Occasionally I'll paint my nails but that's rare as I don't like shellac and can't stand chips, so it's too much maintenance ... Either neutral gloss colour, or bare for me. Pretty and polished is my goal!

Lots of bob haircuts. Curtain bangs are big, too. On the makeup side I’ve been reading that blush placement is changing (to be higher, vs. on the apples of the cheeks).

True confession...I have long Covid hair but and thinking of going to a bob for fall / winter. I think the trend with hair is short after Covid and lots of makeup after going without any at home. I still see lots of very long hair but more short hair. Soon the trend will be back to long hair and minimal makeup. Have worn my hair up for summer. It is so easy, I hate to do anything.
