There were a few very active discussions regarding whether grey hair was aging or not during January.

At the time we had the discussion, I wondered why we were all so focused on looking younger than we are rather then looking the best we can (but not in those words). I saw this pic and discussion and thought I would share it as it seems to be on point. I am not sure whether the model's hair impacts the age she appears to be but it does look elegant and beautiful.

I think that model looks lovely, whatever age she is, and I would never in a million years tell her to cover her beautiful grey. In fact, I believe that people who wear their grey comfortably and proudly are all the more beautiful for it.

I don't believe it would work for me, though, at least not at this point in my life. Give me another 10 years and I may be changing my tune. I believe that "looking the best I can" is currently achieved by coloring my grey, due to my own individual combination of hair color, texture, and percentage of grey, and my personal style.

Other people feel differently, and look amazing with their grey hair, and that's all good too! To each her fab own.

Well, I think she is a beautiful woman who probably would look wonderful in any hair color.

While I'm firmly in the camp of letting my hair transition into whatever shade it is destined to be, I also think that, realistically, most of us are not going to look like the gorgeous gray-haired women who are regularly showcased as examples of how to look wonderful with gray hair.

One of the nicer aspects about fashion blogging is the growing presence of WIW bloggers who show that looking fashionable can come all shapes and sizes. Since our January discussion, though, I've noticed that gray hair on the average woman is almost like the last frontier; most examples are of models, or "super elders", who resemble the average older woman about as much as 20-something celebrities and models resemble the average MOTG. Maybe the dearth of average, 50+, gray-haired women makes it harder to resist the lure of coloring one's hair just to look "normal"?

I think everyone makes their own choice. For me, there is something about looking good but looking my age that works.

I have been fortunate enough to work with a lot of people who were 30 to 40 years older than me (at the time I was in my 20s & early 30s). They were so inspirational, sophisticated & full of energy but they all "looked their age". I always thought I want to be like them - so maybe role models are crucial.

Gaylene is right that most women I. Their 50's and 60's dye their grey hair so much so that it feels odd to not dye. The woman in the link makes me want to grow my hair longer but that's a hard length to keep looking great for an older woman on a daily basis.

She's beautiful, Dianthus! And I agree, inspirational. Love her tonal outfit.

I also think not all of us grey this beautifully! I look forward to the day when a greater percentage of my hair is grey and I can go with it. For now, it's that mousy taupey colour. I add a bit of blonde to light it up, but one day, silver white will take the place of the blonde, I hope.

In my mind, "looking one's age" has never been an excuse for not looking fabulous. There are plenty of wrinkle free, no grey hair, cellulite-free young women who look a mess, and there are plenty of "mature" women I wish I could look more like (and vice versa, of course). Age and hair colour has little to do with it. There is a woman in town here, and while I dn't admire her style, I DO love her hair with several noticeable grey streaks running through it. Her hair is fantastic and enviable, IMO.

And I think that transitioning to grey can be done gracefully and well. While many of us will never look like fashion bloggers in many respects, I think it is possible for everyone to do a shade of grey well if they wish to.

That woman is beautiful and there is a nice contrast between her skin and hair. I am going grey naturally and there are so many things that I can't wear well because of the grey in my hair. I have to be extra careful with the colors and prints I choose. I hope to be able to pull off my grey in a sophisticated way like so many of our fab forum members.

That's the colour of my mom's hair! She was completely grey by 30, and silver by 50. It's always looked fabulous on her, with her pink cheeks and dewy skin.

My grey hair, unfortunately, is not that color.

I agree with Gaylene - examples like this woman are not typical anymore than a model with a certain hair is typical of other women with the same hair. But, nonetheless, I am glad that there are now role models of beautiful women with silver hair. I stopped coloring my hair about 6 weeks ago and now it is very noticeable, but few people have said anything yet. I am scary that way.

I embraced my grey hair about 12 years ago at 46...I grew out my hair a few inches and had all the long dyed hair chopped off. And grew it long again. It was liberating. It does make one look older, but I liked that I had the feel of my real hair back again...and at some point I realized, well, I AM older and why is that a bad thing? It is just a cultural taboo that somehow women should not age or that being grey means you are matronly or not fashionable. What we wear and how we move determines that more than my hair color. I seek out role models for this reason and there are more and more. I think we should do what makes us happy...if you are dying your hair and it's working for you, great. It depends on the purpose of coloring one's hair. I've been dyeing mine auburn since I was 18 (in 1974). My original color was a blah brown and the auburn looks flattering and natural. I have to color the regrowth more often now that I have so much gray, but I intend to keep it that way, not to look younger, but maintenance of looking my best.

I think that the model looks beautiful as well! However, grey hair looks better on some than others. Take for instance if your a summer or a spring season, the summer will gray more nicely due to the coolness of the skin. Grey is predominantly a cool color. jmho though. My mother is a spring, like I believe I am. She is 65 yrs old, but looks much better with blonde hair. She gets hers highlighted and then lets the grey come through. My grandmother was a cool winter and she looked amazing grey!!! I really believe that some women look better if they do dye, depending on their skin tone and season. I will provide a link so you can see what I'm referring too.

See how the blonde hair makes her look more youthful. I believe that cooler skin tones grey more gracefully than warmer skin tones.
