Gray skirt brown boots

Need some quick advice. Christmas outfit to be burnt orange cowel neck sweater with a medium light gray wool pencil skirt and light brown boots. I have dark brown tights and black tights. Any advice on which pair of tights to wear? I also have a black belt or a brown belt the same color as the boots. Any ideas there?

I have heard a rule of thumb that says 2/3 of a skirt-tights-boots set should match in order to look consistent. So, since your skirt and boots are different colors, the tights should match one or the other.

Now, I think most rules should be taken with a grain of salt because I have seen way too many fabulous outfits that break "rules", but you need to understand the reason for the rule in order to break it and still look good. I think the intention is to maintain proportional color-blocking. Go with the colors (belts included) that cause breaks in the way your eye flows up and down in places that you like to emphasize.

I am such a novice in these matters - I had never heard of that rule. But it makes perfect sense and it is a good piece of advice that I will use. Thanks!

Yes, the "rule of thirds" - I first learned this rule in a photography class. It also apples to any type of decorating, whether it's a room or yourself! Nice description of how to follow it, Prudence
And huddgirl, if you could post photos, that would help us decide.
