Can someone help me with this question asap.... How should I respond to the news of one of my married children having a baby even though I am not happy about it for reasons I cannot go into? Thanks!

I would swallow whatever hesitation you have about it and congratulate the couple. It's really not about how you feel- it's about how they feel. A child is a joyous thing, regardless of the circumstances of conception, and you wouldn't want that grandchild to think one day that you did not want him/her in your life.

Yup...me too. For whatever resons you are not happy, it is not the child's fault and you dont ever want him/her to feel unloved or unwanted......

This just happened to my best friend this week! I understand your disappointment and concern but it is not the child's fault and you need to be as open and as supportive as possible. I am sure your worries are based on legitimate reasons but nothing matters now except this new little soul who will soon be part of your life. Be loving and accepting and think as many positive thoughts as you can. You can not change the circumstances but you can control how you react to them. This could be the most joyous gift you ever recieve.

Thanks for all the replys. I would never hold anything against the child and would love it dearly. It will be our first and we do want grandchildren just not under the circumstances at hand. I guess I need to re-phrase my question because I want to make sure I respond right even though I'm not happy about the timing and reason. So how would you guys respond... like what would you say when they tell you? Hope I'm making sense....

Say what you just said to us - minus the negative parts. "This is our first grandchild and we will welcome him/her with open arms and already love him/her dearly." Then mean it.

I agree with the others...unless they are expecting you to be the child's full time sitter. Even then it's a bit late now to do anything but congratulate them and set limits you can live with.

Your answers have helped me tremendously and I will certainly make the best of this situation. Just needed a litlle help in the outside opinions of others to make sure I don't regret anything down the road.
