Got the wantsies... how to know when I'll regret it?

Digital print of blades of grass (reminds me of my favorite poem). Totally my colors. In silk. Half off. Can wear now in the heat (I do have a shortage of heat wave material) or layer up for a CA winter. Good shape for my body type. I've been looking for bright digital prints over the course of... 2 years?

But I'd vowed to SMC until Octoberfest... I'd even returned all but one pair of boyfriend jeans to try and be more strict (had tried in dark wash and two shades of white, paid for with a gift card).

Will I regret not trying this out, or should I stand firm and strong on SYC?

I can't comment on the ethics of it, but I can comment on the aesthetics of it. It's beautiful and has your name all over it!

Might I just share that once one is off work, and has LOTS of spare time to shop, a lot of wantsies will come out of the woodwork at you? Just sayin' . . .
It is a very pretty dress.

The dress is fab and I can see it working with layers too. Maybe ease up on the SYC mandate and go with SYB-in-a-very-controlled way or something, so you can allow yourself these sorts of perfect gems?

Yes, Malina, that is the rub! How perfect is perfect? What next pretty thing will come along?

I got back about half of the cost from returning items I decided I could live without.

I could sacrifice my Gap gift card, use that for a gift for someone's birthday or X-mas, and apply that to the dress, too. It's pretty unlikely that Gap will come up with an awesome digital print this winter...

I have come to realize that I have zero ethics when it comes to this.

If it is returnable, you should at least try it out so you know if it works. Then you could stalk it once you're done with SYC.

This is a main reason why I figured out how many of each category of clothing I wanted. IE: 16 dresses, 9 skirts. 15 pants, 5 shorts. Etc, etc. Now if I want a new dress, I have to decide which one I have must go. It took me while to decide how little I could get by with in each category, and now I think this is really going to help with my 'wantsies' in the future.

I'll be the voice of attempted reason. Love the print and the shape of the skirt. Do not like the bodice at all. Between the spagetti straps and the ruching it doesn't look modern enough for me. A bit twee for you.

I agree with anna and think the top is looking a bit twee and IMO too teenage. Maybe wouldn't matter if you add a jacket.

Sometimes you gotta just try the item on or it will drive you crazy - who knows, you may not love it, but if you do love it and DH approves, etc. then why not? You could at least get a photo of yourself in it. Yes, I'm enabling, I know. I'm not sure about the bodice either. Do you wear a sleeveless bra I guess?

Total honesty: I don't love this for you, unless you are going in a bit of a different style direction. It seems more girly than your usual style. Do you feel like the change in career is bringing out a different side of your style?

Interesting that you see twee/sweet, Anna/Una. I guess you are right, although I interpret that in a grunge way - the spaghetti strap slip dresses of yore, for example. It doesn't bother me that it's not totally modern. I feel like this could go a few different directions - my black sandals, boat shoes to go a little preppy in summer. Then in the winter, combat boots, a sweater layered under OR over, and maybe my white or black leather jackets...

Texstyle, the reviews said there are cups or some kind of padding built in to allow for use without a bra. I also have a very low cut bra with interchangeable-colored straps I could use if I have to.

OK. I am going to try it. And pretty much amend SYC to exclude The Perfect Graphic Print Dress. I already cheated once to try the Karen Kane TRON dress... seems like this will be a pattern with me until I am satisfied.

You could grunge it up, of course, but I see more Victorian corset than punk/grunge. Not so much an issue of modern as of fitting your style rubric.

But as I said to IronKurtin, if you love it you love it and don't need to find a way to squeeze it into your style rubric. Maybe your rubric is changing.

I will definitely keep these reservations in mind when styling it at home, Una! You make a lot of good points - and although I admit I really don't see how it conflicts with my rubric, they say love is blind for a reason! I could have a total blind spot where prints are involved.

I guess a good litmus test will be if it can play well with my UWP and SGT items when it gets here.

I thought it was an SYC rule that returning jeans got you a freebie on a dress. Am I mistaken? Did I not get the memo? I'm positive I read the rules thoroughly. Maybe it was the wrong rules.
