I am very much a child of the '80's. The Sister of Mercy is still one of may favourite bands. In interviews leading up to the election, Andrew Eldritch has said that Trump getting elected would lead to them releasing another album. They've been playing new material for years in concert, but not committing any of it to recording. In his own words:

"And with recording the album because of Trump, I’d have to say I would be so angry that there would be a huge orange shadow in the white house if he did win. I can’t see any way around it. The more oblivating and nastier he is, the more successful he becomes. He brings out the worst in people and he also brings out the worst in me because I cannot agree with what he says and his very evil clown presence. I’m enraged just with the fact that half of America will vote for this buffoon, this racist oblivating prick.

After 8 years of Obama they go for Trump?! I personally think Obama was an elegant, gracious, funny fellow if American can throw up that kind of candidate then why not more? Hillary is supremely qualified and supremely competent you may not like her but she is not the orange buffoon.

I read article on an American political website to elevate my mood that said there are six kinds of ugly American and Donald Trump is all of them. I don’t want to do this to America I have so much love about America and American culture."

At the very least, a new SIsters of Mercy album would be some good coming out of all this...

WHAT ?????? Mochi, I can look at my dogs ( who are super cute ) and many friends have cats....but what about BABY GOATS in tutus and sweaters...

Eminem also has decided to release a new album...as has John Mellencamp. Oh the ART coming out of this.

I can already see the scene in films...masses of young lawyers with laptops sitting on airport floors, eating pizza while they feverishly work to keep people from being sent back...dramatic, edgy music in the background...these movies WILL be made.

It's heartening to see how many people who were formerly complacent now becoming active in their communities. That is the main silver lining I'm seeing at the moment. That and SNL.

But hey, I still love some Sisters of Mercy -- I've heard a couple of covers of This Corrosion but the original still stands!

Echo -- I don't really remember Sisters of Mercy -- I can't even really place the name, which is weird, because I grew up in the 80s. What kind of music is it? Wikipedia just says "rock". I guess I see myself more as a child of the early 90s (I was only 17 in 1990, so graduated high school just as the grunge era got properly underway. I don't think my cultural awareness really started to develop until I was at least 16). Anyway I'm happy for you if they release more music.

I'm not going to talk about who I voted for or why, or talk negatively here about Trump, Hilary, Obama, etc. I feel like we aren't supposed to be talking about politics, yet we're talking about politics.

Aziraphale, Sister of Mercy are often referred to as goth, but I never really saw them that way. They are also often compared to Bauhaus, and while I understand the comparison, I don't see them as that similar. Eldritch often gets caught up in his own intellectualism - he puts "too many words" into most songs, just to get the point across. The point has never actually been the music with him, IMO, but rather the message he was trying to convey (sometimes cryptically).

And, as Angie mentioned, I am a teen of the '80's, but I've always thought that the expressions "a child of the ____" referred more to coming of age as opposed to true childhood. I, too, was a child of the 1970's, and a teen in the 1980's, and I am indeed almost exactly the same age as Angie.

I remember listening to the Smiths and the Cure in grade 8 or so, and that was about as mod/goth as I got. I must have overlooked Sister of Mercy. It's funny the difference two years makes. I'm precisely two years younger than you and Angie, but I am very firmly a child of the 90s, whereas it sounds like you identify more with the 80s (and I know Angie does!). As you say, "a child of the ___" refers more to coming of age, which for me, happened in the early 90s.

It's funny how it takes sometimes a while for one's musical tastes to define themselves, but when they do, it ties you to a time period and you always think of yourself as a "child of the [insert date]". I listened to Duran Duran nonstop all through grades 6 and 7, after which they became profoundly uncool and I threw them over for mod-ish stuff. That only lasted about a year before I moved on to "retro" stuff from the 70s, like Led Zeppelin, but you could only go so far with that because the band was no longer producing new music. I then flirted with Metallica before deciding it was a bit too metal for my taste. I remember floundering, music-wise, for several years -- everything seemed either too radio-tunes pop or too metal -- and then, in grade 12, the clouds parted and alternative music suddenly appeared on my radar. I found the sound that resonated with my soul. It sounds cheesy, but it's true. It's still what I listen to -- not so much the now-defunct bands from the 90s (although there are many I still love), but current bands with new music that would fall into the "alternative" category.

Echo, I know what you mean. I was born in 1970. The '70s and '80s hold a VERY special place in my heart. I love the visual impact of the '60s.

Elisabeth, if you're a '90s gal - you're definitely younger (although you say we are the same age!). I started working in 1992. The '90s had nothing on the '80s - *smiling* - although I adore Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder.

To answer your question Elisabeth - yes, you can talk politics Off Topic. But I will close threads that get overheated or begin taking over the Off Topic section. I've allowed certain threads to run their course so far because that was my judgement call - for better or for worse. It's a learning curve for me too.

Hi Angie -- just to be clear, I said I'm two years younger than you, so close, but not quite, the same age. What I said above is that it's surprising how much difference two years makes! I think it also matters that I was still in school until I was 24 (i.e. until 1996), so I had a prolonged youth, and most of what I remember in terms of my 'cultural awakening' happened in the early 90s.

And that sounds great re. the politics talk. I agree with your approach. People are pretty good about not letting it get too overheated, so I don't foresee too much trouble.

I for one am done talking politics for a while. I'm having apoplectic fits almost every day -- I've got to the point where even his stupid orange face is making my blood pressure rise -- I need a break!

Angie, I have great memories seeing a Cure show in Minneapolis while I was in school. Well worth the trip!

Aziraphale, I adored Duran Duran - still do, actually. And I experimented listening to a lot of different sounds, too. Classic rock didn't hold too much appeal to me (though I don't regret seeing the Stones in Boston), and while I enjoyed Ministry for a while (both their alt pop sound and their metal), I ultimately settled into Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division/New Order, Replacements, Morrissey, Jazz Butcher, etc. But I still love the more mainstream sounds of the 80's, too, like Adam Ant, Culture Club, etc.

But I remain stuck in a time warp as far as music goes, because I listen almost exclusively to Public Radio now.

Oh, I remember loving that one New Order song -- Bizarre Love Triangle? Or am I getting my 80s bands mixed up?

I also liked Bronski Beat a lot. That guy had an incredible falsetto! Also Alphaville. Oh, and who can forget Billy Idol! And the Beastie Boys! If I ever happen to hear Duran Duran (which is rare), I'm hit with a pang of nostalgia.

Really, though, Nirvana and the Chili Peppers were the best of the best for me. I still listen to them. And, bonus, the Chilies are still in business!

I'm still not a fan of mainstream pop, but I try to keep current. For me, here's where it's at for a more contemporary sound: Muse (pop meets 80s metal, and borrows the best from both!), Manchester Orchestra, Green Day, X Ambassadors, Mother Mother, and Fun. Also loved the White Stripes before they fell apart.

eta How could I forget Nine Inch Nails? I listened to that one album nonstop for about two years in the 90s.

Still listen to all that great '90s music too: Chilli Peppers, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Linkin' Park and Alanis Morisette. AND all that brilliant '80s music.

Aw, Duran Duran will always have a special place in my heart for being the first band I ever fell in love with. Just because I thought I was too cool for Duran Duran in grade eight doesn't mean I can't admit that they were pretty fab. I heard "Hungry Like the Wolf" a month or so ago and man, it's still such a catchy tune!

Plus, they are probably the reason I still quite like seeing a man in makeup.

Also, I agree with you -- Chris Cornell is lovely.

I might start a thread about "nostalgic music of your youth" tomorrow. It'll be a nice change of pace in Off Topic!

So for lovers of 80's pop (through all its chameleon changes) the movie Sing Street is a must see. April mentioned in a post when it was in the theaters awhile ago, but now it's on streaming services and the soundtrack as well as the story is delightful, especially for those who remember the impact of early MTV videos on their formative years (including Rio or Hungry Like the Wolf, I forget which one the boys in the film watch). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYk2Vx1z6lk

Great song , Angie! As soon as you said the Cure, I knew what song it would be. I'm slightly younger than you and the same age as Aziraphale and like her, I would say I'm more a child of the nineties. Mainly because I went to college in the early nineties. I love 80's music but don't get the fashion of the 80's.

Speaking of 80's music, has anyone watched Stranger Things? It has a great soundtrack.

Echo, can I just say that I love that anyone here actually knows of Jazz Butcher? And your screen name makes me think of Echo and the Funnymen, one of my favorites of the era. Yes, I have a deep love of the "college" music of the 80s (I turned 18 in 1983), but I still seek out new music to this day and am a big indie-rock nerd. I like that the radio station where I sometimes work plays all kinds of music, including some classic rock, soul, 80s, 90s, and newer stuff.
