Going against laundry instructions.

Sherpa duvets! Such a thing exists? They sound ideal for my Florida boy in German winter. I nearly clicked “go” on this, but then I saw the laundry instructions—dry clean only. What?!?! Who on earth dry cleans their bedding, and what’s the point of having a Sherpa comforter if you can’t snuggle right up against it? What do you think? What I’d really like to find is a duvet cover that we could remove and wash weekly.

I’d get a flannel duvet. I’ve bought them from Lands End and other places. I use a top sheet under the duvet cover, and then a thin fleece blanket in top so I don’t have to wash the cover very often. The fleece blanket gets washed every week because one of the dogs sleeps on top of the bed.

The reason we like duvets is that they are so simple (once you get the dang cover on!)—no fussing with sheets and blankets at night or while making the bed. We’ve had flannel sheets & a duvet cover from Lands End; they are nice & cozy! But Sherpa just seems a step more fun (for a boy’s Christmas present).

I use a top sheet because putting the duvet on and off is such a struggle.

Sherpa sounds awesome until you mention dry cleaning. That’s a deal breaker for me.

One reason why you might have to dry clean is that a lot of washing machines, especially the smaller stacking Euro type, are not big enough to fit big comforters. I use duvet covers for this reason, because even when I had a smaller bed I still had king sized comforters (and now I have a king sized bed to go with it lol). If I wanted to wash the king sized comforter I either had to get it dry cleaned or find one of those laundromats with the XXXL sized washing machines that cost like 5 dollars a cycle.

I suspect the manufacturers are also afraid of differential shrinkage and/or the dye on the dark side running onto the white sherpa.

Yes, the struggle with duvet covers is real, but for me, a week of good sleep and quick morning straightening is worth a tussle every weekend.

Jaileen and Gigi, I hear your agreement about the struggle.

Jaileen, I’m going to guess you sleep calmly enough that your top sheet doesn’t end up crumpled/wadded up in a different position every night, or as many times in one night as it is straightened. My son says “I’m bad at bed” (with a twinkle in his eye, because he knows he’s very close to something with a very different meaning.) Because he only uses the sheet for part of the night, I wind up washing the duvet cover AND the sheet every week when he’s had both on the bed. Might as well skip the top sheet. I save those for warmer nights, when a sheet and maybe a blanket are all that’s needed.

Diana, now that’s something I wouldn’t have thought of! I’ll have to compare the weight of the cover with the recs for machines I’m thinking of. I expect the Eddie Bauer set, which is a duvet cover, not a whole duvet, will be a winner (and I did choose it because I don’t want to have to wash a comforter weekly. That would be a drag).

DonnaF, please explain: why would one side shrink more than the other, if the fabrics have the same content?

This kind of fabric can most certainly be washed. The Dry Clean Only is recommended to hedge against colour bleeding (the black part bleeding onto the faux sherpa part). And it's pretty much guaranteed to bleed unless you wash it in cold, cold water. Even then....

I love my silk pillow cases which I wash weekly, so bought a silk duvet cover that I later noticed is dry clean only. I have washed it but it needs to be ironed, which is a chore. It now lives on the guest bed so only gets washed (and ironed) when guests are expected, not weekly. A cover of something washable sounds ideal for you if you don't mind wrestling to get it back on the duvet ( put on appropriate music and pour a glass of wine for your reward when done). I suspect the dry clean only is for shrinkage as suggested. Do you have a place for drying so you don't use the dryer?

My life has been so much easier since I learned about the Burrito Method of applying a duvet cover. Look it up on YouTube for a demo. Basically, you lay the duvet out on top of the bed, and.spread the inside-out cover over it, then roll them up together (hence the burrito). Then you unroll slowly while turning the cover right side out and pulling the duvet inside it. Easy least.

I love having a duvet, but DH can't sleep without having a top sheet tucked tightly around his toes, so we compromise by using both. So I only need to change it rarely (we have no pets sleeping on it). Even so, I make him praise my brilliance each time, because I used to be Anna's ghost.

L’Abielle, I’ve tried that before and must’ve gotten it wrong somehow. Will have to try it again!

But I do think the duvet cover will be easier to deal with than an entire comforter that must be stuffed into the washing machine, especially since one of them could not be put into the dryer.

Now I just have to figure out how to get it over here, or find a European equivalent.
