Gloves please

When winter comes around, the coldest part of my body by far are my hands. Every year I get some knitted mittens or gloves, and every year they end up dirty, pilled, and battered with holes and pulled threads. For those of you who live in similar climates to NY, where it can get brutally cold and windy, what do you put on your hands in the winter? I am considering getting a pair of used leather gloves, somewhat reluctantly, because I would rather just get one pair of gloves that lasts and keeps my hands warm than trash a new pair every year. Will these be warm enough on their own? Are there any that have a lining?

I think you shop at H&M, have you checked there? I have a pair from a couple years back - suede lined with fleece. Very warm. Nordstrom Rack also often has good deals on lined leather gloves.
Overall, I think mittens are always warmer than gloves, but of course they come with a lower style quotient!

Could you get something like vinyl gloves that look like leather? I could have sworn I saw some last year, that were faux leather.

I would try to get lined leather gloves, otherwise your hands might get sweaty. Unlined leather gloves remind me too much of gardening gloves, unless you get really nice expensive ones. I've seen them lined in cashmere and silk. Cashmere is nice because if your hands are chapped and dry, the cashmere is softer on them than the silk (sometimes silk dries my hands out more).

I am the same..my hands get terribly cold too. I like cashmere lined leather gloves. Have two pairs which have lasted the extremely chilly/snowy Philadelphia winters and are great for driving too..meaning I can actually make use of my hands. My fingers freeze in mittens or unlined leather gloves. the rack..or burlington's coat factory or any of the discount stores usually have these type of gloves from good quality brands and they are marked down too.

Maya - I live in Seattle so not as cold but I still get cold hands and wear gloves all the time. I find that leather gloves aren't as warm unless they are really well lined. But the knit ones do wear out quickly. I just bought a pair of thinsulate gloves on sale at Macy's -- they are like velvet on the outside and have a fleecy lining. They had several different colors and some patterned ones. It hasn't been cold enough here yet to wear them but you might want to take a look.

I live in Boston where it is pretty cold in the winter. Most of the time I can get away with leather gloves lined with (thin) cashmere layer. When it gets supper cold I take out my fake shearling gloves, they are bulky but are the warmest.

Unlined leather is very uncomfortable on the fingers and seems to conduct the cold.

My hands get very cold so that I lose feeling in the fingers. The thinsulate lined gloves are the best! They aren't bulky but are warmer than rabbit fur or wool lined gloves I've tried and last longer. There are fabric versions in a variety of colors and thinsulate lined leather. Kohls often has sales.
