Oh no, DonnaF! Five and a half years I have to keep my fingers crossed he doesn't get shingles! On the bright side, now I know what I'm getting him for his 60th!

Aw sending you much sympathy with your large infant. Hope it passes soon. You are being a great mom!

On the flip side, you could have a British husband, who will decline to mention that he's severely dehydrated and has stomach flu before setting out on a hike (necessitating you frantically begging for more water from passerby's when he collapses and turns white and then having to basically carry him down a mountain).

When left to his own devices while sick, he will simply not eat or drink or purchase or take medicine as he 'waits for it to pass' or until I have to hunt down antibiotics and contemplate getting him to an IV drip by rickshaw in Nepal.

He refers to a compound fracture of the elbow from mountain biking (that got infected because he went hiking in the rain with a new cast which then had to be reopened) as 'a bit of a bump'.

Stiff upper lips can majorly suck.

At least you know he's alive in there as he calls for more pillows.

ETA: Also at first I misread what you wrote as 'I hand washed his sweaty toes' and I was thinking, wow, that is devotion.

Oh, Carter, I hope you still got to enjoy your daughter's graduation.

My friend's hubby recently complained, amongst a long list of complaints, that he was so sick his hair hurt. It was a cold.

Oh, CC! My husband's hair hurt too! For the record, his temp was 100.5 today. My son's school says he has to stay home if his temp is 101 or higher. And yes, I had a great time at the graduation, and I thought her boyfriend was wonderful.

I totally sympathize! I have a DH exactly like this when he is sick. And all the noises they make so you know just how sick they are!

I usually just give him the bedroom and take the guest room. At least then I can sleep.

Thistle, yes, the noises! What's up with that? If they're quiet for 10 minutes, do they really think we'll forget how miserable they are?

Haha, it's totally a man thing. My dad will go and gather ALL the blankets from his bed and set up a nest in the living room because if he was in his BEDROOM we might FORGET about how miserable he was.

Boy is good at being sick though, he usually doesn't need much. Soup and video games and he's set.

Oh, I'm sorry Carter! I hope he's better soon...

My dad is more the type that suffers silently, similar to Rabbit's DH. When I was a teen he played soccer and when he came home one day after playing a game he said during dinner conversation that he was tackled by one of the others. But nothing more. He went about everything in the usual way and my mum left for a conference. Very late in the evening he suddenly tells me to listen in on my sister and brothers, he would drive to emergency to get checked out. I was like - huh? Turns out he had fractured his right clavicle multiple times, he had to have surgery twice to get the metal in and out of the body. Years later he told me he couldn't even lift his right arm up high enough to change the gear, he had to do it with the left arm... So irresponsible!

Whenever I pass-on a virus to my DH, he ALWAYS is twice as sick as I was-(in his own mind) ...

Carter, my first husband once asked me -- without a trace of irony -- why it was that when he got an illness that I or my son had also had, he always got it so much more severely.

My response: "Um...could it be... PERSPECTIVE?"

I'm lucky. Hedev is just a little grumpier than usual when he's sick. And he's only sick once or twice a year.

Astrid, how funny that your dad is on the opposite end of the spectrum. It would probably make me just as nuts if something were seriously wrong, yet he hid it.

Lyn D, he did get a flu shot this year, which led him to the conclusion that he has some very rare and exotic strain of the flu never before seen in this country!

Gigi, I did leave yesterday for an extended period of "errand running". Somehow Whole Foods and Office Max took me 4 hours. If he doesn't shape up, I hear Nordstrom's calling my name.

Deborah, so sorry you have a similar situation. I hope your husband is back on his feet quickly.

Carter, my boy was raised by wolves. I know this because when he is sick he will crawl into a hole and knaw on his own leg rather than admit he is sick. When he had a wisdom tooth pulled and shards were left in his jaw, he refused painkillers until I called the dentist and told them to FIX IT. He cut off part of his finger at work and grunted. He took live typhoid vaccine, which, if you thank goodness have never had typhoid, is actually a heinous stomach ailment, and was basically annoyed he had to stop working every so often to visit the bathroom.

On the other hand, the minute a dog barks in the night he sits bolt upright, throwing the covers off BOTH of us (me sleeping soundly, thank you very much) and screams WILL THAT EFFING DOG SHUT UP SO I CAN SLEEP?! And I won't even discuss what happens when he can't open a jar.

So I guess we all have our Waterloos...
