Girl in a Tux - questions for YLFers!

I'm trying to hone in on a formal outfit that includes the juicy tux jacket. Please help!

Yay) the jacket with a tux style dress, dress by itself in 2. Dress is borrowed from a friend, I have always coveted it and she no longer wears it.

Nay) second option, with slim pants. I am wearing a tank but I'm not averse to looking for the right blouse to wear underneath.

Wildcard: keep trying!!

I like the dress, but the hemlines are too similar in length. I want a greater mismatch.
I think the pants work but you want a real button down shirt.

I like the proportions better with the pants. I would actually want the skirt to be longer and not shorter, as it would look like you had no bottom on from the back. But I am no expert on this, so I defer to Angie or others. I think it looks fantastic with the pants and heels, and while I like a slim and fitted top, I would find either a silk or satin button-down with a clim cut instead. The jacket is GREAT; I absolutely love it.

I liked the dress but I loved the slim pants. I am not sure, but I think it is about proportions. The fuller jacket sits better with the slimness of the pants outfit, really accentuates the cool jacket.

It is a beautiful dress, but I sort of like it better on its own with all the attention focused on the top of the dress.

I think the ruffles are too ornate with the dramatic jacket. At least for this moment in fashion... feels extra maximal since minimal is trending. I love it with the pants, but I think it would also look great with a shorter, simpler dress.

Do you have a simple white sheath dress? I think that would be fantastic - like a riff on a tux look. I love it with the pants!

That jacket is too fab on you for words Rita - just gorgeous! I like it best with the pants and I do like the idea of a crisp button down with it or a white silk shirt. I find the ruffles of the dress compete with the neckline of the jacket and make your upper body very "busy" but do really like the dress on its own - it looks lovely on you.

I love the tux jacket on you! I do think that it's a bit much going on with the ruffles and the jacket though; but #2 is a lovely lovely look!

I'm liking the ruffles with the tux if you are looking for a v.e.r.y dramatic formal statement! I'm not taking hemlines into consideration, and will leave that to others.

I also really like the pants and pumps with the jacket, but not the tee. Someone mentioned a white button up, but also what about a great silk charmeuse tee in ivory

Rita I think the dress needs to be longer than the jacket, but I do like the ruffle action, a lot, very theatrical. As far as #2 , I like as well, you need a tuxedo style blouse, that would be so cool.

You can always replicate #1 with a midi skirt and ruffled top.

If the party was tomorrow, I would probably choose #2, just because I firmly believe you need the skirt to be longer than the jacket. I might be wrong though.

I do have a sheer theory blouse, tuxedo style, in cream, that you are more than welcome to borrow, I'm pretty sure it would fit you. My blouses are very small due to my narrow frame and lack of boobage.

I prefer the pants outfit. But I do also like the suggestion of the midi skirt and blouse.... but ... no. I just really think a gal rocking the pants with the tux jacket is so fresh and awesome. Love to see a tuxedo blouse with it.

I particularly like the pants outfit! It's simple but has drama. I would wear a very simple top in the combo to being in an element of the unexpected.

I actually like the ruffles, but for formal I definitely think the skirt should longer. For date night, a mini skirt.

I prefer the gorgeous jacket with the pants. It is the lengths with the skirt that seems not right to me too.

It is a great jacket and I wish I could make a suggestion but I am a bit stumped.

Love love love the jacket, love the pants, love the heels - I think you look really sharp! I would add black fishnet or diamond-pattern stockings. And a white tuxedo shirt or button-down shirt with the French cuffs showing would be just right. And a cummerbund or belt or some fabric wrapped tightly around the waist.

Oh no! I can't add photos on realtime! Google Marlene Dietrich Tuxedo, and you will see what I mean. Dita von Teese borrowed this look, and wears a white satin vest and bowtie, and looks uber-sexy.

If you go with the skirt... keep going, and add some fishnets or backseam stockings, and something at the waist. The whole idea of the tuxedo with tails is that it's an 'all-the-way' theatrical kind of garment. Give your date a little bit of theatre

I don't think fishnets are going to work. I am looking for an outfit for a bar mitzvah, a bat mitzvah and a family wedding. I am already pushing the limits with this outfit.

I like the dress on it's own the jacket seems too long as it falls below the skirt. I prefer the jacket with the pants. To be honest I like the jacket & would prefer it cropped to the waist as the the tails seem a bit overwhelming on your small frame.

I am 100% for the trouser version, even with the simple shirt because it looks so classy.

WIth the dress, I am at 80%, more because of the length of the two. I suspect the photo makes it harder to see the drama of the jacket, but in real life it would be obviious and probably works better than we can see here. What does family think?

I like it with the pants and wouldn't really do a button up (personally) - I'd keep the top simple but feminine - the one here looks great to me but I can't see what it's made of, etc. Something silky, shiny but simple like this with some skin showing. A button down just seems too severe or expected.

I agree with ts - I love it with the pants & would like to see it with a simple, feminine top.
the juxtaposition would keep it from looking like a costume imo.
