Getting my money’s worth

I was getting ready to wash my summer bathrobe, when I noticed I had gone through the elbow. I didn’t feel it, though, because the robe was lined. I think I’ve had this robe for over ten years. It might be closer to twenty, actually. I had to find another one STAT. I went with this unlined knitted one from Macy’s. It probably wouldn’t have been my first choice, but it was the end of the season, and you get what you get. I think I’ve worn it over twenty times already. A few days ago I switched to my winter robe. We’ve gotten down to the 30s, and we’re expecting a hard freeze this weekend.

Then I looked at my slippers. They were made by Sorel and the sole has held up very well. The lining, less so. I’ve had them at least three years. I ordered these new felt-like ones from Zappo’s. Surprisingly, they’re made in Spain. I put them on and they felt great. I deposited my old ones in the trash bin.

Yes! I had a beloved cotton waffle weave bathrobe that I literally wore until it fell apart. (Fun fact: I got it at a hotel and we are going back to that hotel for my husband's birthday this weekend and I am PRAYING they still have the same robes!)

I can't think of what I've worn into the ground. But I wanted to say I love those slippers! It's so cute that they coordinate with your rug, too.

I can scarcely think of a thing I've passed on that hasn't been worn into the ground. Need to work on that.

Firecracker, I always try to match my footwear to the flooring.

FashIntern, I knew the slippers were worn, but I didn’t realize I’d gone through the elbow of my robe. I don’t always wear things into the ground.

Besides the knees of many jeans over the years, I have worn through only a few things - the toes of my chucks (two pairs), and the elbow of a fleece jacket. I have worn or washed holes in the zipper of a hoodie, but I managed to tack it back in.

I love your new slippers - are they as warm as your Sorels?

Those slippers are so cute!!! As for your question, I've worn many items into the ground. I get so used to how they look, that I really have to take a step back to see the wear. Most recently, a 7+ year old pair of Dansko's that was so worn it was affecting my gait. And many pairs of jeans that wore in a spot that can't be easily/comfortably repaired.

Nemosmom, I think the new slippers are less warm, but I can wear socks with them. I have shearling ones that are very warm, but also snug, so no socks. So I’ll wear them at different times.

Delurked, it’s nice to “see” you again! This is an interesting time, isn’t it? We are spending much more time at home, and it is nice to have decent things to wear.

Kathie, you got your money’s worth out of your Danskos, for sure!

Absolutely! My slippers just went in the trash bin. All of the lining had worn out and it looked like the dog had gotten a hold of them. Love both of your new additions--the robe is cute and the clogs adorable. I may have to look into those. I'm kind of over the fur lined slippers. I'm definitely hardest on footwear--I've worn through toes and soles. Threw out my Naots and Pumas this summer as well. They were beyond donation.. Not so hard on clothes because I have so many...

There's something so satisfying about wearing stuff out over years, isn't there? I usually completely wear out shoes (especially sneakers), jeans, socks, tshirts and the like. I tend to let go of nicer shirts and dresses before they're worn out, which makes sense because I don't wear them often.

I wear my fav pieces to the ground - pj, slippers, sandals, tees and such. I'm fine with it except for slippers now - need new ones STAT.

Yes, sadly - bras. This summer I ordered 4 new ones because the elastic on lower edge of two old ones was basically shredding. Since then, underwires in two others have broken. So 4 in, 4 out.

I like the pretty new robe and slippers.

Those new slippers are so cute! Yes, I’ve worn items out for sure. Just did my annual closet cull, and the items discarded were, for the most part, items that were worn out if not quite through...although there was some of that, too!

Nice new additions and well done on good choices on the last two!!

If I like something I will wear it to the ground....I have to admit that I am quicker to discard something that I don't like as much.

The Rollies have just exited - I wore them hard for two years including my Italian trip last year. The black blouse was 11 years old and showing lots of wear. Both excellent value!!

Angie, I wear jeans and shoes into the ground, too.

Lisa, I don’t wear everything into the ground, but if it’s an every day type of thing, there’s a good chance of it.

Kelly, I wear slippers about 9 months of the year, so the ones I just tossed got a lot of wear.

Julie, your wear pattern sounds like mine.

Slim cat, I hope you can find slippers you like. I used to get orders from Zappo’s the next day, but these took over a week to be delivered.

cjh, One in one out, or four in four out - I’ve always admired those who do that.

Carla, I don’t seem to do a seasonal evaluation. I probably should. It’s a good feeling to clean out things. I haven’t done it in awhile.

I agree it’s a great feeling to really wear something out. Although sometimes a little sad too because it means you really loved it.

I tend to wear out jeans, tees, pjs, camis, everyday shoes, socks, slippers. Mostly they end up in recycling. The items that aren’t everyday items, or that I don’t like so much (aka mistakes), are the ones that are more likely to get passed on without much wear.

My husband wears everything into the ground. His house slippers are held together with roof and gutter silicone, I kid you not.

My husband keeps wearing his WORK clothes until they are falling apart! And I don’t mean “work clothes” like for manual labor, I mean button down shirts and ties! Somehow he just doesn’t notice the threadbare cuffs and collars and I have to repeatedly remind him that other people can see those things and it may be detrimental in a work context.

Now, a ratty old robe....that’s good stuff

Every thing I read in reviews this year is a complaint about quality over what it used to be. DH does not believe it but when the number of similar reviews is over 200 or more I have to think there is something wrong. Today I was looking for small calf boots on.ine. A pair of Born waterproofs I was thinking of ordering we’re panned for quality. One said the heels came apart after 5 wears. That type of consistant comment makes me think hard about the wisdom of ordering an expensive boot that may not last. I have had several” new” Items come undone at the seams like on sleeves which were not at all tight.

The benefit of an annual audit, where every item is scrutinized, is that wear and tear is considered. I catch DH out on frayed collar and cuffs (you would think he would notice, since he does the ironing!). This year I had him flip the bottom of his golf shirts up against the shoulders - so he could see for himself how faded some of his kit had become. He held my feet to the fire, and I ended up purging a few extra things - and rightfully so!

It may be hard to shop due to pandemic precautions, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.

The tights in my outfit with shorts are nearing the end. They have a small hole on the ankle of one leg. The knit is still stretchy, but they should only be worn with boots from now on.

Brooklyn, yes, We wear out the things we love. The other things get donated.

Jessikams, my husband had a shirt that was too worn for his taste. He gave it to our son and he’s been wearing it for several years now. His standards are apparently a lot lower than my husband’s!

Joy, I believe that. Years ago I had a London Fog raincoat. It had a hood and a zip out fleece lining. It was beautifully made. I can’t find anything like that. I think they want to keep prices the same, so materials and workmanship were forced to go down.

Carla, maybe your husband irons without his glasses on! Seriously, I really should scrutinize my wardrobe. Now.

FashIntern, I’d probably darn the hole and wear them with boots as you’re doing.

Giggling at the DH stories! I have to edit DH's things out as I do laundry, otherwise he would wear them forever! Mostly loungewear - tatty hoodies and tees, but he has khakis and work polos that I have to fight him to purge! And, honestly, how many "potential painting/DIY/grubby things" does one man need? *eyeroll*

Nemosmom, when we got married, I hid some if my husband’s clothes. They were so awful I didn’t want him to wear them. And I took him shopping for some decent things. Eventually I told him, but by then he was over it.

I keep clothing that is within 1 size of my current size and in good condition, and eventually find a wardrobe pairing I like for it and wear it out. Like today I am wearing a dressy black tee that is ancient but in good shape and has just the right neckline to go with a new sweater.

Ha, when I was married, certain garments mysteriously got "lost"! My ex had serious five o'clock shadow, so he wore through the collars of sweatshirts and pullover sweaters pretty quickly. Not his fault, but since the rest of the garment was in good shape, he wanted to keep wearing them.
I've had some ratty pajamas in my time, because if they're comfy and they fit just right, I can't bear to get rid of them. And I had a cherry red wool crepe blazer that I finally retired when the lining shredded. Then I realized how shiny the elbows were and knew I should have gotten rid of it sooner.
We all have our blind spots!

Those are great replacements!

I wear through knees and elbows a lot. The cuffs on sweaters and sweatshirts tend to fray on me after a while. I had one wool duffle coat I wore so much the whole lining shredded. I still have it, and keep saying that someday I'll figure out how to re-line it, or pay someone to do it for me. And shoes of course. If a pair is comfortable, I'll wear it til the tread is flat and there are cracks in the uppers.
