Get ready for the '90's

I stopped into Urban at lunch today. They were redoing the entire store. I asked what was up and they said they are getting ready for fall. They are going to be showing lots of 90's grunge, including flannel, lace and wide legged jeans.

YAY: I love the 90's
NAY: Grunge is dead and should stay that way

I only hope popular music will take a cue and get back to real music like the 90's as well! I've heard enough Auto Tune to last me a lifetime, thank you!

Yes -- in fact I just wrote a post about how much I like (and have trouble finding) plaid shirts! So 90s-inspired clothing can only mean good things for me.

@Mo, it was weird actually they were showing all these 90's clothes but playing early 80's hardcore. I'm sure the 19yo's shopping in there wouldn't know the difference.

I like the 80s way more than the 90s, and I was a teen in the 90s (I'll take Minor Threat and Black flag over Soundgarden ANY day!!). That said, I loves me some plaid and wide leg jeans I'll probably participate very, very selectively in any 90s resurgent trends; the 80s stuff just resonates much more with my personal style preferences (and the 70s over the 90s, for sure).

Or maybe I'll be grumpy that a bunch of posers are appropriating my beloved looks? o_0 Nah, I'll be happy to stop getting the stink eye for wearing wide leg jeans.

And I could definitely stand a resurgence of grunge music as well. I feel about 200 years old when I start whining about "kids these days and their wimpy rock songs."

Rae I was just whining about that the other day; "rock" doesn't even come close to describing what the kids are listening to these days, even WITH air quotes

EDIT: Reminds me of a magnet that resides on my fridge: "I'm not old, your music just sucks" heh.

If I go for this trend at all, it will be very, very selectively. I was a teenager in the 90's and did not do grunge back then either; I am basically too girly for it. Plus, now a lot of the baggier grungy styles would probably do terrible things for my figure and make me look bigger than I am.

I do still like the juxtaposition of lacy, girly floral dress + tough combat boots (think 90's Courtney Love).

I think it's like anything: you can incorporate elements into your wardrobe and rock it, but if it looks like you're playing 90s dress-up (or 80s, or 70s) it's too much.

I personally like tight on top, looser on the bottom, or vice versa. Burying yourself in baggy pants and an oversized scrubby plaid shirt does not look fantasitc, but a modernized, more fitted plaid shirt can.

Ugh, the 90s were definitely not my best decade style-wise. Aren't we cycling through the decades too quickly? I can barely keep up--yesterday the 50s, last month the 70s, tomorrow the 90s.

In general = Nay! There will be too many Courtney Love wannabes running around.
Some aspects of the 90s = Yay. Actually, I still haven't stopped wearing a few things but in updated ways (slightly different shapes, with more modern clothing).
Music-wise -- there are some bands I really couldn't listen to anymore (and that goes for 80s music too), but really the teens I know have been listening to this stuff for the past few years anyway. It's more genre specific than decade specific.
I will be kicking myself though b/c I sold a bunch of vinyl quite a few years back when I was simplifying and organizing things (was desperately lacking space) -- including original pressing Sub Pop artists and other labels. These bands are really big right now and I had some of their original recordings. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pixies.... shoulda kept them and sold them now.
Don't forget, it's not all grunge! The mid-90s saw the the emergence of acid jazz and resurgence of retro groove artists. Very urban music and style -- but done generally well.

I was a teenager during the 90s and didn't dress fashionably at all, I actually like to have my chance at doing it even if it's only in a fitting room
When I think of the 90s I don't think of grunge though. It's more early Tori Amos and Björk. I loved the way the styled themselves, too. And Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star.

Spent the whole 90's in a business suit - and business attire was much more formal then. Weekends in jeans or bushwalking gear - while bushwalking, I should add.

So what was the 90's fashion anyway? I must have missed it! I fail to have any defined picture of it in my head.

Actually it's coming back to me! The 90's were BLACK.
Everyone went vego and ate lots of carbs 'cause it was supposed to be so good for you. Protein was deemed to give you a heart attack straight away. How fashions change!

I remember plenty of short belly tees in the mid 90's and my 501's worn high up with a belt - like many of Jerry's GF's on Seinfeld lol! No scrunchies this time around, though . . . ha!

Oh, I forgot about the scrunchies (yikes!). Those always make me think of Sex in the City, where Carrie is arguing with with her writer boyfriend over a character in his novel who wore a scrunchie. She said no self-respecting New Yorker would ever wear one!

I had a pile of very short, tight tee shirts in the 90s that were worn with high-waisted baggy pants. One time my mother in law was helping me fold clothes and she held one up and said, "Whose tee shirt is this?? It looks like a child's shirt!". She wasn't wrong. I don't plan on buying any more of those this time around.
