General holiday outfit

What do you think?
Do I need a necklace? Red or brass?
If this topper cuts me off at an unflattering spot (I think it does—top of my round belly) I could wear a long black cardi. But then my choice of outerwear is limited—as it is, I can wear my red puffer, espresso bomber, or long navy wool coat. The cardi is longer than two of those, so the long one is the only one left.
What about boots? Good to have a little pop of color, or should I go with black or metallic floral to match the dress?

I like it with the topper. For a party, I’d consider adding a brass necklace. This outfit reminds me of a lady I saw once: her outfit stuck in my mind. She was super cool. Her tunic was red plaid.

Oh, I’d probably go for the longer coat, but depending, a cardi longer than your coat could work... I think it depends how thin the cardigan is.

Thanks Rachylou! I’ll have to do pix with the cardi when I’m back home. Wearing that dress, I feel like it makes me look skinny, but looking at the front-on pic, I don’t like the belly. The vertical lines of the cardi might help.

Both options work. I do like the dress without cardigan - personal preference. Jewelry would be nice - red bracelet, a hair clip in metallic, necklace. All topper ideas sound good - maybe bomber ( it'll look like you wearing flirty skirt with it ).

Consider getting a deep red scarf to match the boots. You could use it with this outfit and whenever you wear the boots. I long scarf can also do a good job of camouflaging a belly. I like the red boots with the top for the holidays but a metallic combo would also work well.

I've said it before, but you rock those minis! Just a thought, but what about if you instead of black as a base layer, chose white, brown, tan or gray? I think that would elevate your outfits even more than black does.

Another one of my side comments: in my hood, I feel like all the boutiques are either owned by German ladies or carry the work of German artisans. And I feel your style is very German, because the ladies dress like this. Lol. This is probably not true in actual Germany - I mean of course you get the natural full range in actual Germany... I’m jus’ sayin’...

Synne, you are such a creative dresser—thanks for extending that my way. I’ll have to rummage around my tights and top base layers to see what I have that matches. Thanks for the idea!

Rachylou, we probably don’t see the full range of German, because we’d have to actually leave Berlin, which we rarely do. But it’s funny to think the way I dress is German—I don’t think of it as anything but me.

Joy, I do have two patterned scarves with lots of cranberry that work with the boots—my familiar paisley one, and another fuzzy plaid one. I’ll have to play with them.

Slim Cat, I haven’t tried putting my hair up since the cut. This is indeed a good time to try that.

I was impressed in pics 1-2- 2 especially I think, how slim you are looking!
I like to wear cropped cardigans or jackets with shorter dresses/tunics too, I like the proportions. I honestly don’t think it accentuates the belly. We women who have had a baby get that slightly rounded belly- see Torontogirl’s thread.
Re boots, I like your red ones but also think my fave boots of yours, the metallic floral, would be a great colour with the outfit.

Are you wearing the bodysuit under that dress?
The necklines don’t quite line up. If I remember correctly that’s been an issue in the past.
I like Synne’s ideas of different colored base layers, probably something more tonal. Think of today’s blogger look

Thanks Jenni! I’m slimmer now than a few months ago, heavier than when we arrived, and much lighter than a few years ago. It isn’t as much Yo-Yo-ing as it sounds like. I got fatter than I'd ever been in Florida, lost 40 pounds, put 10-15 on at the shock of our first winter here, now am slowly taking it off.

I think it’s keeping the kid around, not giving birth, that makes that tummy. I didn’t have it the first few years of my son’s life (as in this pic with him, and lol at my consistency with the miniskirts). Perhaps you have observations from your profession.

I might change the boots out for different occasions--metallic for a concert, red for my son's basketball team party.

Anna, yes, thank you! I meant to ask if the necklines bothered anyone. My black scoopneck base layers are sleeveless, which won’t work with a sleeveless dress in winter. I’ll have to look at necklines when I look through other possible base layers. Thanks for the heads up.

Also consider putting a looser top or sweater over the dress, possibly cropped.
That would make it a lot more current.
I was having a hard time finding visual inspiration for styling that dress.

ETA, not the best examples, but some ideas. I’m not a huge fan of the black OTK boots in the first look, I think a lighter color would work better

What Joy said! It looks best to my eye without the little cardigan. Metallic footwear would also work but the red boots are fun. I like Anna's ideas also.

Hmmm....thinking....you have those "cherry" tights...do you have a sweater that colour, too, to wear over top as in Anna's example, and then different (not red) boots, for a different variation?

Suz, you mean the kinda purpley ones? I have toppers they coordinate with (of course—all my berry), but none that match. I’m thinking of getting cranberry/burgundy tights, might try them with the metallic boots—it’d be weird to have them be the color as boots, wouldn’t it?

Suntiger, that’s another good idea for more color.

I am still down with this miserable, interminable cold. If it ever goes away, I want to try on some of your ideas and will post more pix.
